014: Kempton, April 2nd : 5f (5) Maiden

RACE SUMMARY

  • Slightly muddling race run in a slow time up the stands' rail of the straight course and not a true 5f test. Cool Creek was left in the stalls by at least four length yet managed to close up on the leaders and make a challenge towards the last furlong, this was blocked off as the fading pacemaker Getbuzzin drifted left to the rails. Either Cool Creek is a good 2yo or the actual race was of low quality because he would not have been able to get back into a proper 5f race after his slow break.
  • The following tables gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. Boxes in green indicate a runner that over-performed in the race against the pre-race profile and in pink one that notably under-performed.

Glenmuir opened 5/2jf and finished as 5/2f as Cool Creek drifted and support for Getbuzzin brought him in to 11/4. He has a non-5f pedigree but did not have to show 5f pace to win this race run in a slow time. His trainer has his runners notably ready early in the season in 2005 and this was his fourth debut win (and one second) from five runners. With Cool Creek not performing to his best following a slow break and being hampered he only had to perform to expectations for a comfortable win. His trainer said "he's more of a 6f mid-season prospect" after the race. The rating of 64 is on the generous side given the slow time.

Getbuzzin has been entered in a variety of races before this run including the Brocklesby and a seller. The seller entry suggested that the trainer did not think he was very good. However, he opened at 3/1 and received support to get to 11/4. He was given a relatively attacking ride to lead until fading entering the last 1f. A typical debut by the standards of the trainer's early debuts in 2004 and his one previous runner in 2005. Given that the trainer has used some 'old-fashioned' techniques in the past it is worth considering whether the seller entry was ever expected to be his right level.

[For example, you could imagine a situation where he spoke to his old mate Mick Channon who told him they didn't expect much from Grantley Adams. R Hannon said their 2yos were behind their normal schedule and would be happy with a good run from Cool Creek, he could see Glenmuir didn't have a 5f pedigree and thought that a fit Getbuzzin might be competitive to win. Even if he has his limitations beyond being an early season 2yo.]

Anyway, an acceptable debut by trainer standards although the slow time for the race is a concern. Ought to be able to improve to rate around 70 early season.

Cool Creek opened 5/2 jf but drifted to 100/30 third favourite. The stable has had a similar number of runners so far in 2005 as in 2004 but they have not been as competitive (he had 3 wins from 5 runs by a similar stage in 2004). Lost at least four lengths as he stayed in the stalls. Still well off the main group, who set a reasonable pace, until closing up on them quite well between 2f and 1f from home. With the leaders stalling the jockey had to slightly check and take him for a gap on the rails. This was shut-off as Getbuzzin hung left to the rail. The jockey had to stop riding, and then pull back and around Getbuzzin and kept on again to finish on Getbuzzin's right side. Beaten 2.5 lengths despite his problems in a slow race.

Grantley Adams drifted from 7/2 to 4/1 as fourth favourite. Travelled ok on the outside before a solid fade from before the last furlong. The trainer has now had 6 debut runs in 2005, 3 have placed including two winners and three have been unplaced and disappoionting. All six of these runners have started at between 2/1 to 11/2 and picking out the good 'vibes' from those with little expected of them is, as usual, difficult.

Cumbrae led for 3f before a bad fade in a slow race. Trainer's better runner in 2004 developed in later season after being given a break from early runs.
