Pre-race Summary

April 1st SUMMING UP
  • A very typical early Kempton maiden race with the usual dilemma that none of the runners have a fully positive profile. The two with the best profiles are from trainers who don't target FTO wins and so there is the usual balance between ability and readiness to consider. For example if Grantley Adams is actually a 90+ rated 7f type for later in the season then he could win this on debut even though it is not really his game.
  • Either way they should both be 75+ winners during the season and should be assessed with that in mind.
  • The excellent start to the season with his 2yos, including on debut by BR Millman adds another factor when normally this race is a simple choice between Hannon/Channon or the best type for the biggest owner. However it would be more of a surprise if a runner with his pedigree could win at 5f now than the other two. They can't all be good, or can they Mr Millman?
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • The race has been won by a superior 2yo making it's debut for Sheikh Mohammed in 2003-4 backed up by a range of later winners from minor (Grand Option) to useful (Spanish Ace). In 2002 the first and second developed to be winners in the 75-85 range.
  • Given the early date and the trainer's approaches with debuts a performance in the range 67-73 is a good benchmark for the winner. The superior Holborn was an exception rating 80+ but the runners behind ran to the usual ranges.
  • TRAINERS:
  • A typical field for the race in effect with a runner from both R Hannon (won race in 2002 with STO runner, 2 x later 70s winners beaten on debut 2003-4); and M Channon (2nd in 2002 with newcomer for J Abdullah, won in 2003 with superior debut for Sheikh Mohammed runner, no runner in 2004 but Sheikh Mohammed newcomer with J Gosden won).
  • The 'usual' trainers are backed up by a different collection each year. BR Millman has not had a runner in this race 2002-4 but has had a runner in the earlier 5f maiden and has already won the 2005 early maiden race here with Makabul.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sire Mull Of Kintyre (Cumbrae) has a STO runner.
  • PADDOCK & SALES REVIEWS:
  • Getbuzzin was reviewed at the sales and rated an 'at best' 71 indicating she could be competitive in early races but probably would not progress. She is with a trainer that does not target strong debut runs and has been entered in a variety of races including a seller.
  • Cumbrae was reviewed when he ran at Kempton 7 days ago. This showed him to be a handful but to have more scope than the usual 2.6k sales buy and rated 64. This would not be competitive for this race if it is up to normal standards and he needs to 'quieten down' and develop anyway.
