030: Newmarket, April 13th : 5f (5) Maiden Fillies'

RACE SUMMARY

  • The stalls were in the centre of the relatively narrow railed off strip on the Rowley Mile course. With the large field the pacemaking was done on the far side of the strip by Abbielou, Angus Newz, Adeje Park and Glasnas Giant with Flashy Wings pressing this group by halfway. This may have been a slight disadvantage to those on the stands' rail side who lacked a pacemaker and gave this far side group a 2 length start relatively easily. This most notably affected Oceans Apart and Fusili.
  • The leading group all hung left from 2 furlongs out and finished close to the stands' rail. Peace And Love caused some minor interference to Baytown Valentina as she hung left with this group and got a little unbalanced.
  • The race lacked a runner who was likely to be useful, ready and best suited to 5f. The performance was just an average one for a fast 5f but the group of better fillies finished 1st-5th and Flashy Wings, Oceans Apart and Peace And Love showed good promise to be much better over 6f+.
  • The two fillies who had shown 50s rated form in finishing second on debut were both limited physical types and had not looked best suited to 5f anyway. They were always going to be vulnerable to bigger and better fillies at any distance despite the advantage of a run. They finished 6th and 7th marking the changeover from the better fillies to the relative 'garbage' behind.
  • The following tables gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. Boxes in green indicate a runner that over-performed in the race against the pre-race profile and in pink one that notably under-performed.

    Flashy Wings was a strong 5/4f with the stable confidence that she was useful and no strong positives for the others. She does not have an obviously good pedigree for 5f at ought to be better for 6f+. Her trainer is about the only on who runs 2yos by Zafonic early in the season. It was notable that she is owner by Jaber Abdullah who seems to get the best of the trainer's 'cheaply' bought fillies passed on to him. The trainer has now had three debut wins in 2005 and two have been for this owner.

    She looked to have grown from the sales and muscled up well. More surprisingly she looked mature both physically and mentally which she was not at the sales. She broke slightly slowly but was soon tracking the pacemakers on the far side and travelling well. She was pressing for the lead at halfway and went on after 2 furlongs out and hung left steadily across to the far rail. She won slightly comfortably. It was just an average 5f performance but we can presume she will develop from this although likely to be better at 6f+.

    Oceans Apart is half sister to two runners that have won over 5f on debut (one at 3yo and one at 2yo) who have developed to show better form and rated over 90 later over 6-7f. She did not quite manage to make the dam's record three but ran a strong race full of promise to be able to rate much higher over 6f plus. She was probably slightly disadvantaged from being on the 'wrong' side away from the pacemakers and gave these runners a start. However she finished best uphill in the last 1f. She rated above expectations despite drifting from 8/1 to 10/1.

    Abbielou continued here trainer's record of introducing unusually competent and competitive debut runners at this meeting. His debut runs are rarely competitive unless the 2yo is at least useful+ and probably capable of competing in Group races. He seems to have chosen his most natural 'speed' 2yos in the last two seasons for this meeting. He won this race with the useful+ Siena Gold and Abbielou (for the same owner) put up a solid debut here without suggesting she is as good as Siena Gold. She broke second best and set the pace on the far side for more than 3 furlong and kept on for third. A solid debut of the type the colt Alpaga Le Jomage made for the trainer at the 2004 meeting. Likely to be a 75+ maiden winner on this debut effort but not up to Siena Gold's standard.

    Peace And Love has a notably non-5f pedigree and was steady around 14/1. Her trainer has shown with his few previous 2yo runners that he assesses them at home and he usually chooses a sensible time and race for them to start in. Reared in the stalls and lost around two lengths but had the advantage of being on the same side as the pacemaking group. She recovered fairly quickly to be two lengths off the leaders at halfway. The pacemakers all drifted left from inside 2 furlongs out but Peace And Love hung left and cur across another runner and became slightly unbalanced and the jockey allowed her to gather herself. She showed a solid response in the last uphill section as he asked for another effort. A promising debut although not as 'unlucky' as it may be thought. She did not show herself to be a real 'speed' filly but showed good promise to develop over 6f+.

    Adeje Park was her trainer's first runner of the season and shortened from 6/1 to 5/1 in a market that was static overall. She ran a similar race to his earliest debuts in 2004 looking competent but not competitive to win and probably not good enough to compete with the best fillies here. In 2004 the earliest debuts included runners which were backed on debut and beaten. She ran close to the pace on the far side and appeared to run to her ability.

    Fusili had been professional on debut and finished second in a moderate race that was not a 5f test. She lost some ground with a slightly slow pick up and got into a position on the stands side of the group well away from the pacemakers and this was probably a disadvantage. In a race with a solid pace she in effect gave those runners a 2 length start. She was never competitive with the first five (four of whom came from the far 'pace' side). However she moved forward as the race quickened and was still going forward at the finish. She is in a typical bind of being a small filly that needs 6f and probably 7f but will struggle against better types later in the season. Despite her limitations she has the advantage of a professional attitude and may find a race while rating under 70.

    Glasnas Giant had shown lowish selling level form when finishing second on debut in a non 5f performance. She raced on the pace side here but was outpaced as the race quickened and slightly faded late in the race. She is a limited physical type and will need to drop in class to be competitive.

    The other fillies did not show any particular promise and look unlikely to be able to show 70 form. Small notes for

  • Angus Newz who at least showed the pace to press the pacemaker to halfway but faded more than would be expected to perform below expectations;
  • Tequila Rose who showed little in the race in a similar way to the trainer's other debut runner in 2005. The trainer's debuts have been very variable over the last four seasons and runners with some ability have made 'duff' debuts. Worth at least checking her performance next time for improvement.
