More Time Third favourite and backed from 7/2 to 3/1 for a trainer where support on STO runs should usually be taken notice of. He had run an inexperienced and possibly unwilling debut here on softer going but his reliable trainer can be trusted to identify his better horses and sort out the problems.
Broke slightly left handed from the outside stall and driven by the jockey and showed enough pace to lead and cross in front of the field to get to the stands' rail. None of the others looked keen to lead so he did not have to stretch himself too much to complete this manoeuvre. Set a solid pace and more than a length clear at halfway. Quickened the race from inside 2f out and kept on well without seeing another horse given his FT blinkers. The level of form is not strong and he did not look notably 'bigger' amongst the group. Probably can improve a little further but not useful.
Gelnmuir Steady around 15/8 second favourite and carrying an 8lb penalty for a win in a slow 5f race. Broke ok and settled third and travelled well enough and 2 lengths off the pacemaker at halfway. Hung left as the pace quickened and probably outpaced but got organised and responded quite well to be going forward in the last half furlong and picking up Amber Glory. Ran above expectations although not looking suited to a fast(er) 5f and solid promise for better at 6f.
Amber Glory has looked a fairly easy 2yo to classify being smallish
but a neat and ready type (as she looked at the sales). She seems straightforward
and runs consistently although her limitations means she has been beaten
by bigger and better types in her last two runs now.
A reasonably strong 11/8f carrying her 4lb penalty with the other winner
penalised 8lb and the third favourite having run poorly on debut.
Ran her typical race and and broke best at the start and settled tracking the leader for a length and half at halfway. Made a little progress on the leader as she made an effort as the race quickened inside 2f out. However she never threatened the leader and stalled late on and lost second to Glenmuir who had been a little outpaced. Can find a little improvement but seems to have mostly shown us what she can do.
Soft Gold Creates a problem for setting the form level. Entirely unsupported at 100/1 but ran a race of minor promise given the presumed form level and well above expectations. He broke slightly slowly losing a length and then showed inexperience (as he did through the race) to lose ground and be off the back of the group behind a solid pace. He was more than 4 lengths adrift at halfway but plugged on ok and was gaining ground at the finish while still not looking as if he knew what was required.
He looked a taller, narrower type in a group of sprinters and not obviously a 5f type. His trainer's debut runs tend to be competent and within 10-14lbs of final rating. If the form rating is in the right place then he has prospects to be a 65-70 rated type and a possible winner in the mould of Apple Of My Eye and Anfield Dream (from 2004). Track for solid improvement NTO.
Gee Four 16/1 fourth favourite and ran a poor race on debut in a weaker race when supported. Had looked a type that would need to develop to reach mid 60s rating. The jockey seemed to have as his priority teaching him to settle in this race. Broke a little left handed but then ran slightly freely but the jockey held him up and took the opportunity of More Time crossing in front of him to settle him and drop back. Held up 3 furlongs off the pace at halfway and no progress as the race quickened before stalling in the last 1f. Ran below a low level of expectations but the lesson in settling could account for that. Still needs to develop to reach 60+.
Tin And Lint 66/1 on debut in a novice race the trainer used in 2003 to introduce a late season winner. Ran a typical debut and driven to track the solid pace after losing a length with a slow pickup (the break was ragged overall though). Outpaced and faded from 2f out and no obvious promise.
