RACE SUMMARY

  • A moderate to average edition of the race and limited by the lack of a good previous winner from R Hannon and/or WGM Turner. Smooch was the only previous winner in the field having won a moderate race on the AW at Lingfield.
  • The race saw a strong pace from the start with Smooch & Rack And Ruin getting into a duel and immediately stretching the field. The group were spread by more than 6 lengths at halfway with the stragglers driven along.
  • The strong pace saw the front four stall from 1.5f out and the field start to close up. Smooch & Rack And Ruin were very tired in the last furlong with Rack And Ruin fading away. Smooch had enough race fitness to plug on well enough to win. Suesam had been outpaced and well back appeared to finish strongly to take third but was probably just plugging on through very tired fillies. The time was below average and a moderate level of from although Smooch deserves some credit for winning after contesting a pace that saw off Rack And Ruin.
  • The fillies looked a limited group given the quality of the race and its seems unlikely to have significance at a higher level.
  • The following tables gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. Boxes in green indicate a runner that over-performed in the race against the pre-race profile and in pink one that notably under-performed.

Smooch Drifted from 11/4 to 7/2 as second favourite with support for Rack And Ruin. Broke well and set a strong pace on the rail in a duel with Rack And Ruin (who ran freely & was restrained). Led by a neck at halfway and the pace meant that she stalled from 1.5f out and Dream Rose who had sat 2 lengths off the pace was able to make a effort to challenge as Rack And Ruin dropped away. She was tired in the last furlong but plugged on to hold the newcomer. Looked the best size and build in a moderate group given the race quality. Showed slightly improve form and credit for winning despite the pacemaking. Can probably improve a little further.

Dream Rose A non-5f pedigree and ran for an important owner breeder. Opened 7/2 and finished 100/30 third favourite. Tracked a strong pace by two lengths until made a small effort to close on the stalled leaders around a furlong out. Was tired herself by this point and just plugged up and unable to get by the pacemaker who gave her weight. Looked just a smallish size and medium build and likely to be an average maiden winner type rather than better quality. Positives for her competence on debut and keeping with a strong pace. Ran to expected level.

Suesam Drifted from 4/1 to 6/1 as fourth favourite on debut having been a non-runner earlier in the week in an ordinary auction race. Broke slightly slowly from an inside draw and outpaced from the start in a race with a strong pace. 6 lengths behind in last and driven along at halfway. The pacemakers stalled and tired from 2.5f out and made her look as if she finished strongly to third when she was staying on past dead tired horses. Showed some inexperience and seemed to lack real 5f pace but credit for plugging on. Looked a moderate physical type and still needs to strengthen. Ran below expected level and not an obvious chance of a maiden win in the near future.

Rack And Ruin Backed from 5/2 to 7/4f in a moderate group for the race. Trainer has won the race previously with strong debut winners but his first filly had not won until earlier in the week. Broke well and hooked up to duel with Smooch and set a strong pace. She ran quite freely and had to be restrained early which she seems to resent. Pressed the winner by a neck at halfway and made an effort to lead 2 furlongs out but  they both stalled from 1.5f out and she faded notably in the last 1f. Looked small and neat and not obviously useful. Ran below expectations here and the free-running is a minor excuse but has looked an average type in two runs.

Indian Lady 12/1 to 10/1 and preferred of the trainer's pair. Looked the tallest in a small field but lacking build. Broke well and settled in the second pair 2 lengths off a strong pace. Held this position until the leading group stalled from 1.5f out and she also faded at this point and got tired.  Ran below expected level and possibly went too hard for her ability but looked a moderate to average type at best.

Matterofact 12/1 to 14/1 and second string for the trainer. Showed little promise. Broke ok but outpaced behind a strong pace although showed a little inexperience. 5 lengths off the pace at halfway and driven and made only a small amount of ground on the stalled leaders late in the race.
