076: Newmarket, May 8th : 5f (5) Maiden Fillies'

RACE SUMMARY

  • A difficult race to place. Run in a reasonable time but a strong tailwind and the race lacked a strong pace. The moderate Left Nostril was allowed to set a modest pace to past halfway and she was given a hard ride as if she is recalcitrant. The race turned into a 2f (at most) 'sprint' and those best placed when the sprint started stayed there. The first 8 were relatively close together at the finish and the actual level of form is moderate. [Even that level is a little suspect because the 6th - Left Nostril - was well beaten in an AW claimer two days later and drifted strongly in the market. Her 'attitude' may have got so bad in that race after a hard ride (whipped, etc.) here that she ran poorly but she still finished amongst the group here].
  • The following tables gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. Boxes in green indicate a runner that over-performed in the race against the pre-race profile and in pink one that notably under-performed.

Donna Blini  Strong support from 8/1 to 4/1 second favourite with only the favourite supported. The trainer has chosen his best types to run at the course on debut and they have competed much better than his average (A win and two places from 4 debuts in 2005). His two strongly supported runners at other courses in 2005 have been moderate.

Stood out in the smallish group for athleticism and is active and carries herself very well. Probably just the biggest overall although Aliceinwonderland was slightly more heavily built. Drawn one off the rail and broke quickly but hung left (showed a similar left hand bias pulling up) in front of the group to finish on the outside tracking the leader. and best placed for the 2f sprint at the end of the race after a modest pace. Showed a solid increase of pace to go a length clear and hold on to the finish and still going on. Only had to run to expectations to win and had the advantage of her starting position in the sprint but still showed the best pace..

A debut win by a 2yo for a trainer in a 'tough' maiden is usually the sign of a useful+ type. The support here suggested she's a 'natural ' and can develop further but did not look outstanding. Can improve to 85+ rating but would need to see more to prove she's superior.

Aliceinwonderland  5/4f to 11/8f but received support in a market where only Donna Blini was also supported. Looked smallish but the heaviest built in the group. Broke slightly slowly from the outside stall and lost a length. Settled towards the back of a closely packed group behind a modest pace. Allowed to pull through to make ground to be tracking the leaders in 3rd at halfway. Well placed when the '2f sprint' started and showed some quickening but outpaced by Donna Blini and jockey accepted this late on. Ran below expectations but would need to have been allowed to take the pace along to reach that level.

Rapsgate  9/1 to 10/1. Broke ok and settled in midfield and ran slightly freely for the first 2f and had to be held up. S outpaced when the race quickened from inside 2f and slightly inexperienced. Kept on third best one into stride and gaining at the finish. A solid debut and promising that she can reach 70+ level. Smallish to medium size but solid build.

Donna Giovanna  6/1 to 7/1. Smallish and medium build. Broke well and settled in 3rd tracking the leader behind a modest pace. Well placed when the 'sprint' started 2f from home and showed ok pace to quicken with the first 2 but then faded late on uphill and the outpaced group closed on her and she lost 3rd to the best of these. Not obviously useful on this but ok for an average+ winner.
