MAY 12th SUMMING UP
|
Flashy Wings won just an average 5f maiden at Newmarket on debut
and wasn't really tested as a '5f sprinter'. Her trainer keeps her at this
slightly extended 5f and runs the maiden Dream Rose for the same owner
in the 6f Listed race at York. She has more scope than Smooch and
receives weight from her.
The race has been won by the odds-on favourite in the last three
years although with different degrees of ease. As with many small field
conditions races the lack of a solid gallop is usually the main contributor
to the favourite's 'difficulties' in looking assured at the end of the
race.
Flashy Wings is likely to be a similarly short priced favourite. The only
real niggle with her is whether she might be vulnerable in a '2f sprint'
race to a better class 'speed' type. The answer is probably 'Yes' but it
is questionable whether Smooch or Brazilian Style are good enough
to test her.
As a general point it will be worth noting the performance of Brazilian
Style. She would be easy to dismiss given that she runs for a 'small' stable,
has a moderate pedigree and cost 1.6k gns at the sales. On her debut she
travelled well and showed a small change of pace in a low level race and
might well have won with a clear run. She looked a certain future winner
in that grade although not obviously up to better class. However, her trainer
has shown a sure hand with his 2yos in the last 2 seasons and has put them
in appropriate races. In that context it will be interesting to see how
well she competes here.

RACE QUALITY:
|
The race usually draws a small field each year but with a number of useful+
fillies from a small group of bigger trainers. The race has been won by
the odds-on favourite in the last three years and all were previous winners
and have proved good winners later.
The field is usually completed by a variety of quality but usually including
fillies capable of competing in Conditions races latter amongst the moderate
types.
|
TRAINERS:
|
The race is usually a 'private' event between some combination of R Hannon,
M Channon, B Meehan & B Hills. This season is unusual with only M Channon
represented and he runs two. He has had the runner-up in the last three
seasons to each of the other trainers. Presumably its his 'turn' to win
this year.
