May 13th SUMMING UP

A fascinating edition of the race, not necessarily of high quality, but
an interesting mix of types and 'stories'. The race attracts a wide range
of runners (from Attraction downwards) and the last three winners have
won the listed Hilary Needler Trophy on their next run.
This year's race looks slightly lower quality and a more competitive edition
lacking a better type to outclass the rest. In theory Myths And Verses
represents the best chance of another Listed winner in the field and is
with the 'right' connections. However, her debut run and appearance did
not leave the impression she was up to that level and the form was moderate.
She should improve here but unlikely to be a level that others cannot reach.
Countrywide Belle was very cheap at the sales and has already outrun
her pedigree. Her run against Crocodile Bay at Doncaster looked a solid
improvement (in her first run on turf) and her trainer his his 'little
sprint fillies' in good condition. She carries a penalty but sets a reasonable
standard.
Killarney Beauty is the first 2yo runner of the season for an average
trainer with a below average 2yo record. However, she looked a natural
little sprinter at the sales and he tends to have his earliest debuts quite
well 'wound up'. The competitive 2yos he does have tend to be in the first
batch of debuts.

RACE QUALITY:
|
The race is usually won by a filly capable of rating 80+ supported by a
range of types including a couple that can rate 70+.

T Easterby has won the race twice in the last three years and both
fillies have won the Listed Hilary Needler Trophy on their next runs. In
2002 he won with On The Brink on her STO run who was in the same ownership
as this year's representative - Myths And Verses.
M Channon has three fillies for important owner Jaber Abduller that
he has tried to run over 5f. Flashy Wings won an Newmarket in a maiden
on debut and comfortably won a Newbury Conditions race yesterday. Dream
Rose made her debut when second in a Salisbury Conditions race and ran
in the Listed race at York yesterday. He tried to debut Secret Night
in a Warwick maiden race but she refused the stalls. She now is due to
run in this Novice race. It is likely she's the lesser of the three (and
hard to believe that Flashy Wings isn't better than Dream Rose so why didn't
she run in the Listed race?)
K Ryan has three similar early season sprint fillies which he has
won with. All have been reasonably cheap purchases or retained at the sales.
The three were among his first 4 debuts and it is usual that his earliest
debuts are competitive 2yos. As with the Channon fillies is is interesting
to consider the ranking of these three. Countrywide Belle, who runs
here, was the cheapest of the three and has won on the AW before running
well in a Doncaster Novice. Lake Hero ran in the Lily Agnes after her maiden
win. Amber Glory won a Novice at York this week where the trainer often
sends his better 2yos.
In 2003 he ran a similar filly in the race - Mirasol Princess - who got
as close as any filly did to Attraction that year.

First season sires Beckett (Secret
Night) & Primo Valentino
(Myths And Verses) have runners. Neither has had a winner.

SALES REVIEWS:
|
Killarney Beauty rated 70 and a just above average chance of being
a 2yo winner. Just below average size but just above average build. Neat
and slightly mature and looked capable of being competitive up to the rating
in early season.
