Pre-race Summary

MAY  25th SUMMING UP
  • A moderate race in profile with none of the group having a strong profile. Trainer M. Johnston has used the Ayr 6f races late in May to introduce some of his best 2yos in recent seasons. The only runner with a previous run had made a strong debut. Linas Selection looks a different proposition having had a previous run, and a poor one. He started at 14/1 on debut at Hamilton and the longest SP of any of his trainer's FTO runners in 2005. Most have been 11/2 or shorter although only one has won. He got outpaced by halfway in his first race and overall gave the impression of being moderate.
  • Hits Only Jude ran in the same race as Linas Selection last time on his third outing. The pair were close to each other coming to halfway but he gained 10 lengths from there to the finish. He was easily outpaced by two useful runners but ran well enough for third. He probably has limited improvement but sets a reasonable standard.
  • Glasshoughton finished 4th in a moderate race on debut and the other runners from that race have mostly competed poorly since. His trainer usually has his 2yos ready to rate near their best on debut and he would need to show abnormal improvement for 6f and a longer break here to beat the level Hits Only Jude has shown.
  • In a moderate race overall a solid debut run from an above average newcomer would be competitive. The only likely candidate looks to be Amadeus Wolf  who was retained at the 2yo breeze up sales. His trainer does not target strong debuts and only one of his 14 debuts so far has been rated over 60. That was probably his best 2yo who was second at 20/1 in a strong York maiden. It would therefore need some combination of an unusually strong debut from him and those with some form underperforming for him to win FTO.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • A good class race in the last two years with M Johnston running useful+ types. However, they have tended to win quite comfortably from mostly moderate types.
  • TRAINERS:
  • M Johnston  has won the equivalent race for the last two seasons and both were odds on favourites. He has also had a runner in the 6f Novice race at the meeting when it was run in 2002-3. In 2002 the useful Helm Bank won on debut and in 2003 later Group 1 winner Lucky Story was beaten into 4th by runners with previous good form.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sire Mozart (Amadeus Wolf) has a runner.
