2002 - 2004 Statistics
E. A. L. Dunlop (Newmarket)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • He has never targeted 2yo racing and he seems to prefer to target 3yo+ racing. His strategy with 2yos is the standard one for a trainer with his type of owners who does not target 2yo racing. He aims to win a maiden in the first three runs with most runners and the better types will be stepped up to Listed+ races and the others that show good ability will be retired until their 3yo careers. Few horses will run more than 3TO although the stable has added a few cheaper sales buys which may run more often.
  • The stable's record with 2yos has declined in 2003-4 and reached a low point in 2004 with only eight winners of eight races and the lowest number or runners (by 10 horses) in six seasons. The stable has had illness problems with the horses in the most recent seasons but the record with 2yo runners is still moderate given the quality of horses he has. Has the quality of runners been lower in 2003-4?
  • The 2yos are usually made up of around 60% owner breds (mostly Maktoum family) with the rest bought at the sales for between 50k gns to 150k gns. In 2004 he ran less owner bred 2yos and 7 of the sales buys were relatively cheap at between 5k to 30k. The table below summarises winners to runners by source of 2yos in 2003-4.
  • Owner Bred <50k gns 50-99k gns >100k gns
    2003 5-26 0-5 1-5 3-6
    2004 6-15 2-7 0-7 0-2

  • The owner bred winners have mostly been ordinary level maiden winners and many of them have been poor types. Why have the Maktoum family owner breds not produced better results?
  • He has a very poor FTO record with 5 FTO wins from the last 190 debut runs. It's safe to ignore his FTO runners in all but the most exceptional situations. However, note that many of his debuts runs are at better courses (Newmarket, etc.) and because of that they often get rated too highly. Consider the fact that the Racing Post rated 9 of his debut runs over 70 in 2004. If these had been at lesser courses then, in theory, they could all have found races they could have won on debut.
  • Better runners tend to improve 1-10lbs on their second runs. Moderate runners who have poor debuts can improve by more but this is variable with some moderate runners running to a lower rating STO.
  • Unlike many trainers the 2yos that win during the season are not grouped within the earliest debuts. The winners can make their debuts at various point during the season. This probably relates to his approach to 2yo racing which is not targetted at 2yo wins and the type of horses he has.
  • It is also an interesting point that he has clear phases with race distance of debuts through the season. So a few will make 5 furlong debuts, then he will go through a stage of 6f debuts, then 7f and finally 8f. There is little overlap in dates with these phases so the 2yos probably make their debuts as part of the appropriate phase.
  • His style of aiming for STO wins (having shown solid form on debut) and the general poor form of the stable has meant that there is little value in trying to back the stable's 2yo winners.
  • He has a poor record in nurseries with only one win from 35 runs in 2002-4.
