2002 - 2004 Statistics
P. W. Chapple-Hyam (Newmarket)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Returned to Britain from training in Hong Kong and restarted his training career here for the 2004 season. Had previously been very successful in Britain and was notable for targeting 2yo racing. He used to assess his 2yos and identify the better 2yo types and they would be ready to win or compete strongly on their early debuts and the superior ones would progress through the season.
  • Two thirds of the 2yos in 2004 were bought at the sales for between 2k to 62k gns plus one more expensive at 115k gns. The remaining third were owner breds which as a group had average pedigrees at worst and many with good pedigrees.
  • The sales buys included five bought at the breeze up sales of which four won (either on debut or STO) and the other placed third on all three of its runs at Newmarket showing form capable of winning most open maidens.
  • His strategy in 2004 was to try to win a maiden in the first two runs and then step the better runners up to Conditions+ races. Only four of the debut runners for the stable ran beyond 3TO but did not run in high class races. These four included three that had taken until 3TO to win their maiden (two in modest company at Warwick) and one poor type.
  • In line with his previous reputation his debut runners were ready to compete on debut and most of the better runners made the first three on debut. He is a classic example of t trainer whereby if his debut runners to do not show up well on debut then they almost certainly are poor. Consider that he had 13 runners that finished seventh or worse on debut and none won in the season.
  • One point to note is that the earliest batch of debuts (April to Mid-June) competed well on debut but none won including those at short SPs and supported. He was quoted as saying that he had been slightly caught out by the gallops at Newmarket (he had trained at Manton previously) and had not had the early runners as fit as he thought they would be. It was notable in 2004 that he had a better STO record with runners that had a break of 21 days or more to the second run.  It will be interesting in 2005 to see if the early debuts include more winners.
  • The SPs of the debuts runners is very strongly correlated both to FTO performance and to overall ability. A debut SP below 5/1 in the first half of the season and below 10/1 in the second half are strong signs of the better debuts. Runners at longer SPs are normally uncompetitive.
  • Unlike many trainers that have their runners competitive on debut his runners do progress with racing and the better runners can improve by 20lbs or more from debut. He shows a good understanding of the level of form needed on debut to win the chosen races.
  • In line with the high level of assessment that goes on with the 2yos there was a clear split in 2004 between early debut runners (to end July) which included most of the winners and those with the best ability and the later debuts. With the exception of the 2yos bought at the breeze up sales (which he may have put through a different preparation) the later debut runners included no winners.
