    Race Virtual Paddocks FTO P&L Qualifiers
    • Wetherby Place (Newmarket 4:05, RM Beckett, All Debuts)
    • Dialogue & Jukebox Jury (Goodwood 4:25, M Johnston, 7f Debuts). 
    • To continue the Tom Dascombe story. At Bath yesterday another debut for him (Belated Silver) was strongly backed into 5/4f, perhaps unsurprisingly given the owner was Harry Findlay and he was at the course. The ground was tacky after rain but Belated Silver dropped out long before that should have told.
    • Getting a horse ready for debut, both physically and mentally, is a real skill and it doesn't appear to come naturally to Mr Dascombe. He isn't alone in this and a trainer like Michael Stoute would get a lot of unplaced debuts, even with good horses, because the 'experience' the horse has on debut is more important to him than the actual result. Here's a list of moderate debuts efforts from 2007 to make the point - Flawed Genius 6th, Floristry 7th, Dr Faustus 5th, Conduit 7th, Colony 9th & Patkai 7th. With Mr Stoute the debuts get more reliable later into the season because they have been in training longer and have had more chance to mature.
    • Now, Mr Dascombe is clearly a good trainer who is going places and likely to get substantially improved backing from this season's yearling sales onwards but he isn't the finished article yet. Steaming into one of his on debut at 5/4 when faced with solid rivals who have experience at present is clearly a poor move.
    • The tale continues today with Noverre To Go starting out his career at Doncaster. He's another breeze-up purchase so some of the earlier training has been done in another yeard. At least this one isn't Findlay owned so he isn't going to have 'Radio Harry' blaring in his ears (...where's the 'Off' switch on this...). Mind you, he is owned by Mr Duddy who's 2yos trained by Kevin Ryan usually place on debut at shorter odds and the best of them (Wi Dud) manage to win.
