Five maiden races on the day and a total of 33 horses declared which will
be making their debut. A range of interesting horses start out including
Espiritu
(cost 490,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze up sales) who runs for
Jeremy Noseda and is owned by Robert Ogden. In the last three seasons this
partnership have had high class runners, with expensive 2yo sale purchases,
such as La Chunga, Sander Camillo & Francesca D'Giorgio. None of whom
won on, pre-Royal Ascot, debuts.
-
Mr Noseda's record this year is 8 FTO winners from 16 runners with just
two other placings. Three of the debut successes have been since he restarted
with runners in July after a break when his early Royal Ascot 2yos ran
below expectations. His normal tactics are to package up the best sprint
2yos to run in the period late May to early June.
-
The 'Market' has missed the fact that he has a good group of 2yos and has
tuned them for debut. Only 5 of the debuts have started at longer than
7/2 and four of the five are non winners. The other was his second runner
of the year who won at 5/1 from a poor draw at Lingfield. The three odds-on
horses have won FTO.
-
Trainer Clive Cox has produced three debut winners in each of the
last two seasons. This were in the June to August period and with his best
2yos. The first four of these were in the 9/1 to 16/1 range with the last
two shorter and with the market having some knowledge that they were better
ones. The trainer is behind schedule this year with no winner to this point
and he doesn't appear to have run a 'better' one. Two moderate ones have
managed to place on debut to suggest he can still prepare one for the first
run.
-
The stable has been in moderate form overall but has started running a
batch of 2yo debuts in mid August. One of these ought to be better than
the average and a 'surprise' debut win could be amongst them. He runs Decision
who has a solid Sales Report on debut at Newbury.
