£10k Bonus Race. GSS by later afternoon with 8mm of rain during the morning but changed to SHV after this race (first of meeting) after further rain. Good going as it had been two days prior. 2mm of rain overnight. Showers forecast before racing. Rail at Maximum width and 'fresh ground' for the meeting after a string of 'rail out' meetings. Light NE Wind = Crosswind from the left up the Hill, Quarter Headwind from Left in the Home Straight. Duffield website blog pre-race = "Scentpastparadise and Spirit of Rio run in the maiden at Pontefract tomorrow on coveted and rare “good” ground. With seventeen runners it looks a warm affair and with easier races around it is a shame this isn't one of them but they both need to start somewhere and with a serious lack of decent ground tomorrow represents the first realistic opportunity for them to run. Two nice horses in the making, both will learn from the experience and improve for it. I am looking forward to running them.". A 'warm affair?? A filly with an OR63 was forecast joint favourite. Put a number on it.... everyone using vague phrases against different baselines just doesn't make any sense. This was a weak race on profile and the 4 'Likely' ones finished 1st to 4th. An ok bigger won one who raced unbalanced and hung in previous faster races. Still not poised here but allowed a soft lead on the inside throughout in a slow race against lesser opponents so got away with it. Then look to the trainers with newcomers who are profitable to follow at this time and you would land on Fahey & Duffield. Makes 2yo racing a lot easier than sprint handicapping because the same old stories pop up race after race, season after season, with the Market often lagging years behind. Does the fact that neither seem able to assess the quality of the opposition feed into the value SPs? Does the Duffield quote above reflect she really thinks this was a 'warm' race or was that just 'puff' to delay the owners if her pair finished well back? Duffield website post-race = "Scentpastparadise and Spirit of Rio both made promising starts to their racing careers tonight at Pontefract, but the 'good ' ground we hoped for failed miserably to materialise after further heavy rain. Quickly changed to 'good, good to soft in places' and shortly after the first race changed again to include the description 'heavy' the ground was far from ideal. However they both behaved really well and looked professional throughout, the filly showed plenty of speed and travelled well while Spirit of Rio looked a bit lost halfway but stayed on really well to take fourth place behind Scentpastparadise in third. There was less than three lengths between the first four, two lovely horses who can both find their way to the winners enclosures this season.......with a bit of luck." |
