=== Pre Race ===

Buffalo Soldier a cheap buy at the Brightwells 2yo sale on April 1st. 4th x 2yo debut of season for trainer Morris after only runner in the period 2007-14. 3rd Breeze but. The two usable 2yos in 2015 have both placed STO (at NOTT) off unplaced debuts at ASCT/NMKT. Breeze Video showing a smaller one, probably, IP body length and looks ok build. Head up in the gather as if held. But, when asked to start galloping at the 2f breeze pole the head never comes dow. In line with that uses little reach in front and scuttling a bit and never fully balanced. looking a slower breeze. Trainer started the 2 x usable ones first and 3rd and this one less good?

Hannon in 215 says of Shawaahid that he is a "lovely, big strong horse.... 6-7f 2yo..". Why start at 5.1f? Will Hanagan try to get him involved in this lesser maiden? This a Median Auction Maiden limited by Sire's Sales and Hannon has chosen what was probably the most expensive yearling by the sire to run in it in another eg of how the stable know how to work the systems.

=== Post Race ===

Field at Halfway with Field Of Vison leading (Black/red) with Comparinka (beige) alongside. Shawaahid in behind that pair with Hanagan unusually getting involved on a Hamdan debut.

Interesting group in PRev and an easier than average group to characterise. A wide range of sizes and types. Interesting to compare the careers of Field Of Vision & Shawaahid and ponder over how far they are going to diverge from the neck between them today. The pictures below are of the pair and no prizes for guessing which one cost 10+ times more to buy as a yearling than the other.

Field Of Vision on the left cost only €10.5k at the sales and he has some defects which caused that. He is a bit smaller and appears still to be 'up behind'. Looking at all the pictures that may be more structural and he is dip-backed to some extent. His forelegs are incorrect and this shows up in his action. You imagine as a yearling he might have looked small and poorly put together. But, he has put on some ok build and looked in excellent condition here. He also has a mature and willing attitude. The defects will limit him to some extent but he can run and the trainer has done a fine job preparing him. The 65-70 take looks fine and he lacks scope. But, he should find a win in a lesser race if he doesn't run into a bigger one again.

Shawaahid is on the right and you can imagine he looked a fine big lump as a yearling and hence the 100k price. The sire has a good record with 2yos from smallish crops and the fact his career at stud never died completely an indication of his respected merit, if never fashionable. His better 2yos tended to be medium and very bulky and could look a bit small (a bit 'Wi Dud') Shawaahid seems to have the bulk but more size and length as well. Seems to use his range well in movement. Likeable effort to win FTO over 5.1f running down a leader off a usable pace for 2L. He presumably isn't a 5f horse and winning this on plain basic size & ability against a 70ish opponent. A likeable type who should develop well over 6f and 7f (if he stays) and ok for Listed level and may well be a Hannon type who tires a 7f Group race later in the season.

Porcupine Creek a tearaway on debut and fell in a heap over 6f after pulling himself to the lead after a long fight with the jk. All the signs here that this STO run was all about education and getting him to settle. Hooded, 2 handlers in prelims, taken to post early alone and then held up in the race with some pulling but not as bad as debut. As his picture shows he looks fine for 70+ as a sprinter when he runs a proper race and a good 'shape' to his body. One to track because he is better than his two well beaten runs so far suggest.

Compton Place another sire like Elnadim who has had a long career and good at getting sprint 2yos. Comparinka a classic tall, rangy but a bit oddly put together type the sire gets (think Angus Newz). Comparinka lacking the bulk of the better ones and too narrow body. Lack of power limiting her.

Aizu workmanlike but an ok size and strongly built. Movement stopping him making the best of his power? Lacking a positive attitude in the prelims. See what OR he gets for nurseries. Would be fine off OR62-5 say if he can be motivated.

Intimately neatly made but size limited and a bit too compact?. Buffalo Soldier not fit not ready. His picture fits a bit with the Breeze notes above. He has a deeper front but an upright neck. Tails off behind looking a bit too 'long', up behind and lacking power behind.

Always hard to PRev a Shaw 2yo properly because you know it will almost certainly not win even if it looks like Frankel. Cool Image also by Elnadim but not the smaller dark haired 'ball' type either. She is well bought at £20k as a sibling of a 2yo Group winner (who had won at Listed level at the time of the sale). Seemed to have a bit of size and power to be usable 60s. The type you wish another trainer had so we could find out what that size/shape and set-p amounted to. For example, if FOV's trainer Tuite had been given the hundreds of thousands of £s owner Brian Johnson has pumped into the Shaw yard for negligable return - what might Tuite had achieved? Miles better than the actual ROI to date you might well think.
