=== Pre Race === Palmer quotes on Zumran = "We run Zumran in the 5f fillies' maiden at Newmarket on Thursday and she is a nice, well-bred Rock Of Gibraltar filly and a half-sister to winners that include the classy pair Hors De Combat and Stroll Patrol. There is not a lot of her but she has done plenty of work, has speed and is sharp. She has been putting her hand up for an early debut in her recent work, and she hopefully gets her chance on Thursday.". === Post Race === Race plays out like an Average Pace at most and relatively little change in positions and distances from 2 out to the finish. Like some combination of usable pace, going & relative abilities not separating the fillies out much (they may be similar types but worth looking for the better ones than they showed). Rowalnds Sectional Time report had this race as a 103% Finishing speed for the last 2f (above 100% usually indicates a slower pace in early race enabling the prominent horses to finish the race off at a faster than 'Average' speed for track & conditions. Need to think about this more because yesterday's Novice at the track also given a 100%+ finishing speed when it played out more like Strong Pace race breaking up in the last 0.5f+. If not then Dream Of Dreams achieving something unusual to get to 2nd. Quote from trainer Palmer's Betfair blog on April 19th = "I was staggered that Zumran was backed into favouritism on her 2yo debut. If someone had asked me before the race I would have said that she was a good each-way shot at around 8-1 or 10-1, but no more. And everything came as a surprise to her, too. She completely missed the break and didn't like the ground. However, she wasn't beaten far and, all things considered, I was delighted by her run. In fact, she missed the break further than she was beaten.". ==== Review Notes contributed by @hughonthehill (Twitter handle) ===== ==== Note :- The ratings number at the end of each review summary is an estimate of what OR they might reach rather than a reflection of how they ran on the day. See the Paddock Review Rating Section on this website for reference. Fiery Character review An interesting race from a market point of view in that the petite but prettily made Zumran was backed in to a plainly ludicrous 7/4. A classic case of Lemmings rushing to join the crowd over the cliff, perhaps influenced by the good performance of Copper Knight and Gifted Master yesterday. Camargue and Love Oasis were also a touch on the dainty side. Fiery Character – Kept rugged throughout the pre-parade and only seen briefly but enough in the paddock glimpse to clock that there was some substance and strength to her. Continued Tom Dascombe’s renaissance with a return to speedy early ones. 81 Perfect Madge – almost a replay of Dream of Dreams from yesterday, running on late under Spencer to snatch 2nd. Upper end of medium in height but not particularly strongly made. I was not convinced she was fully fit. Improve substantially nto 79. Camargue – Very fit, not all that much substance to her and out speeded by a stronger filly in Fiery Character. Still stuck on well. 77 Lexington Sky – Bit more strongly made than Camargue, about medium sized, appeared only to be 80-90% ready and should improve a lot on this nto. 79 Love Oasis – It was hard to see on paddock review why this one should be 16/1 and stablemate Camargue 9/2. Hard to split them physically. 76 Seafront – Trainer James Tate does not seem to look for debut wins, this one a bit downhill at the shoulder but still quite taking and better than the picture suggests. Running on well at the death. 78 Zumran – shades of Nidnod last year. Better than that one but not really big enough to cope with some of these. Very well turned out and looked fit. Limited by size 75 Black Redstart – smallest and plain looking, went ok and presumably for trainer Bailey has shown a bit. 69 Savannah Slew – Looks bigger in the picture than she was, medium, but still caught the eye. Ran green and no doubt here to learn. Almost certain to pick up a race for Given before too long. 76 Quantum Field – Striking filly. Biggest in the field, very green in paddock, prancing and spinning. Well-proportioned and looked fit. Dirt bred and a question as to how she handled the ground although she probably left any chance it the paddock. Might be a whole lot better than this showing. 80 |
