Some quotes from Wesley Ward wrt Create A Dream = Create A Dream came to me and started breezing and from what I've seen so far, she'd just jump right right up there with all the ones I've brought over to Ascot in the past, at least in the mornings......It just remains to be seen what she'll do in the afternoon!........ She wouldn't look like Acapulco [in terms of her size] She's a European pedigree and probably has more of a European look to her. She's a tidy horse and she's just a beautiful filly.
Further quotes from Ward on April 1st interview with the TDN = The problem I have now with all the 2-year-olds I train is that there are limited chances to race them all. A week from Friday will be the first 2-year-old race in the States and that will be on dirt, so when you have a turf pedigree horse, or a horse that has an affinity for the grass, you’re forced to wait until mid-June for the first 2-year-old race on the grass at Belmont.... The horses bred for the grass can’t get the footing that the dirt horses do, the typical American speed pedigree, fast 2-year-olds, so when you have the horses ready to run and you know they would beat the dirt horses on the grass, what do you do? You’re forced either to wait or to bring them over here, so this is a new venture to see if we can start bringing them over early and having some preps prior to Ascot. At home, there are no 2-year-old turf stakes races until late August so there again, even if you were to win with one, you’d be forced into the stakes on the dirt which doesn’t really make sense.
MaJo interviewed before the race and said The Last Lion compared well to the 3 who won last week. TLLion had been declared for one of those early races but had been ballotted out. MaJo noting he was running the 2yos that had worked best and all his 2yos had worked at least once on turf (all soft so far) before a race. Saying he did a lot of work on artificial surface but all his 2yos have at least one work in a trio out of stalls before they run in a race.
=== Post Race ===
Pace too strong for all except The Last Lion and some notable mostly empty Deep Closing by the 2nd/3rd having been unable to go with the pace to at least Halfway. Picture above shows some of this Race Flow and Fold with TLL clear in the lead on the rail with Jk looking around at times and properly easing TLL.
Side-on Picture at Halfway. TLL just taken lead from Tallinksi with AAwesome 3rd & Springwood 4th. 5th is Monte Cinq who broke ok then held back 1-2L & needing chivvying along for 2f+ and a whip slap when he started hanging left. In 6th is Simmy's Temple who is being pushed along. Last 2f+ of race could be summed up as the only horse comfortable sitting close to the solid pace - TLLion - zipping clear then eased down in the last 0.5f. The horses in 2nd-4th at Halfway had tried to attend pace and paid for it by fading well back. The horses in 5th/6th at Halfway far enough off pace to stay on past the faders to be 2nd/3rd. Not sure what those places are worth but Simmy's Temple staying on stoutly at the finish and took time, and some trouble, to get from on the rail to out widest on track around the back of MCinq. STemple not showing 5f speed but the strength of the finish, given issues, presumably worth taking seriously to some level (guess at 72-74).
Fit looking Tallinski looking in good condition and ready type led on the rail and set too stiff a pace. He is fading well back in the picture with the big white face and the black/pink colours. Absolutely Awesome showing up as a nother complete type and a size below Tallinski. AA very fit for day and made 2nd best job of going with the leading pair. He is in second still in the picture in the Grey/Green colours. Monte Cinq is plugging on from midfield+ in the light blue sleeves and white cap. Real question mark over what Simmy's Temple staying on to 2nd amounted to. She is widest on the track (light blue, No. 14) and still well back into the last 1f. Ended up staying on to clear 2nd and still plugging on at her pace at the finish. But, had been well behind and beating up on dead horses to get to 2nd.
Post race MaJo clarified further that The Last Lion had one grass gallop work but since that was with Sutter County they were pretty sure TLL would compete strongly here. Jk Norton saying that 'Trotter' (Adrian Nicholls?) had done most of the homework on TLL and had told Norton he would need a 'Parachute' to pull TLL up after the race. Norton adding he was 'gutted' Create A Dream was an NR because he would have liked to have tested TLL against a US prepped horse.
