SUMMARY
Solid Pace with Race shaping up like a typical true 'grind test' on the surface.

David Barron noted as a trainer to take very seriously in the 2014 post season review. As can happen, he then had a poor season by his standards and early winners and competitive types absent and a general lack of quality. Rescued the season with second half wins and his 'class' showing through with a 20% Strike Rate (marvellous) overall. What was missing was quality earlier runners and FTO wins and he recorded his first loss for backing all his debuts in 6 years.

With that background Wick Powell an early test of whether Barron was back to his usual 'form', MO, or whatever. He has won the equivalnet race before with Mitchum who tried a Novice the Royal Ascot (19th) before finishing his season well beaten off OR84. Wick Powell just a medium size and a bit of body length and not quite straight set up but uses his range ok. Looking solidly built and in good condition. Broke 1st and accepted being asked to drop to 2nd to take a lead. Pulled away fine in the last 1f and presume he will end up rated OR80+ when perhaps an OR75+ handicapper in the full term. Not looking as zippy as Mitchum did when he won this race. But looking a thorough professional and leaving the impression he will make the best of his ability and not tail off in the way Mitchum did.

Another good and professional run FTO by a MaJo 2yo in Mailshot and set a lead and tried hard to the end. Beaten by a slightly taller and stronger horse. Not convinced Mailshot is a strong 75 type and mostly ready here.

Percy Toplis a similar size to the winner and a bit boaty and less than neatly made. Greener than the first two home and offering to hang left and not looking fully suited to the surface. Able to get to a Volunteer 3rd by staying on past the moderate and unready ones. Say around 70.

Interested in the background to Vona. Owned by Nick Bradley who is behind a lot of the Middleham Park Racing buying success and trained by a shrewd operator on that partnership's account. Which raised the possibility that Vona was a usable one, at least, getting going early to advertise Bradley's new business venture (?). 20/1 said today wasn't the day even if she was usable. Check whether she turns up Drawm 1 or 2 in the BVLY Novice Auction race(s) nest week.
