RACE SUMMARY

Description and Ratings

  • Race featured a solid pace but a slow time. This may have been because the leaders went too fast but also because they were a moderate group overall. The first three sat off the pace and made their efforts into the straight (1st and 3rd ran 4 wide or more into the straight.) and pulled clear in the last furlong from the fading moderate pacemakers, the poor runners who never got into the race plus the (probably) eased Slack Willy Hilly.
  • The following table gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race.
  • P. Whisper Danjet Kung Hei A. Bankes P. Excellence Slack W. H. Emily's Will Fashion Chic Tour D'Amour Blue Minx
    [Estimate] 62 53 54 40 36 38 34 32 33 26
    Pre-race 48 61 56 51 59 53 55 43 37 27
  • The runner's were poorer as a group of physical specimens than expected prior to the day and this contributed to the overall poor level of form. Other than the first three the others were not ready to compete to close to their best. The winner put up a similar level of form to the previous winners of the race but still at selling level by the standards of the full season.
  • Phantom Whisper has improved physically from the sales where he sold poorly, having put on muscle in front and improved his movement in front. The dam has now produced four winners to the sire (three on debut) and she seems to put an 'engine' into them whatever they look like. This, plus a professional attitude allowed him to reach a higher level than expected in a moderate race.
  • Danjet was more lightly built than expected and not correctly set-up yet. This along with a (predictably) non-attacking ride by the jockey led to the runner underperforming in relation to expectations.
  • The W.G.M. Turner pair Angelina Bankes and Par Excellence were not as ready as expected and are closer to his standard '50s rating' types and lacking potential. This, along with their pace-setting probably led to their fading in the final furlong and they are capable of slightly better. For example, it would be surprising if either of them were to represent the trainer in the Brocklesby at Doncaster (he must have something better).
  • Emily's Will was very young mentally and not physically ready but has some build to develop. Slack Willy Hilly is small but has improved from the yearling sales. He was eased (?) in the last one furlong plus (very hard to judge what R.Hughes is doing later in races) after getting a slight bump from Danjet.
  • The other three were the expected mix of poor types and not ready and performed as expected.

  • Future Relevance

  • None of the runners impressed as capable of being worth a 70+ rating from mid-season onwards. The winner may be capable of rating over 70 in early season. Danjet and Kung Hei ought to be capable of winning early season races rating in the low 60s. The only others of interest are Emily's Will and Slack Willy Hilly. Emily's Will ought to be able to rate into the 60s and had a little more size and scope to develop than most in the field. She may develop with racing over the first 3 runs. Slack Willy Hilly looks typical of the type the trainer should find a little race for on his second run (rating in the 60s) and then struggle in the type of races he has to run in after that.

    Name Rating Sum-up
    Slack Willy Hilly
    66
Rating is an 'at best' for S/3TO. Small and limited by size but improved muscle and movement from sales.
    Emily's Will
    63
Not fit enough and mentally young on debut, but has some size and build to develop with racing and run into 60s, probably at 6f.
    Phantom Whisper
    62
Improved muscle and movement in front from sales. May be able to rate just over 70 in early season.
    Danjet
    62
Very fit on debut and notably 'up' behind. Some snap behind and probably rate 60s over 5f.
    Kung Hei
    60
Small and limited by size but solid build and neatly put together. 60s sprinter early season.
    Par Excellence
    59
Probably 50s rating at best and lacks scope to develop. Taller than Angelina Bankes.
    Fashion Chic
    55
Bigger and more build than trainer and owners first string Tour D'Amour. Notably short, especially for length. 50s rating at best.
    Angelina Bankes
    54
Short, small, sprinter type and 50s rating at best.
    Tour D'Amour
    52
One of smallest in small field and lacking build. Seemed to be following Fashion Chic around, 50s rating probably.
    Blue Minx
    45
Attracted 'No Bid' at sales. Oh dear.
