1. RACE SUMMARY

a) Performance Comparison

  • A race run on sticky ground and with a solid but usable pace. Danjet only needed to be competent to beat a moderate group by 5 lengths. She put up a performance about 20lbs better than the previous race which was a 2yo seller with newcomers finishing first and second. The placed runners in this race would have struggled to win the seller on what they showed.
  • The following table gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. A box in green denotes a runner that exceeded pre-race expectations and in pink a runner that performed notably below expectations. In either case it is useful to try to identify the reason for the difference.

  •
Danjet Glasnas Giant Angelina Bankes Ooh Aah Camara Halcyon Lodge Rundear Ellcon Magical world
    [Estimate] Post-race 65 50 40 36 38 38 23 5
    [Profile] Pre-race 63 54 48 40 56 63 61 60

    DANJET
  • Unlike her debut run she was ridden prominently and railed well. She went clear from 2f out as the weaker runners stalled and folded. The failure of the other better runners on profile led to an easy 5 lengths win but an average time.
  • GLASNAS GIANT
  • Paddock review showed her to be small & limited and nothing like her solid 7f pedigree nor her sire's better types. Mild each-way support from 10/1 to 13/2 in race where, as often, a number had similar support. Travelled ok behind Line-of-3 leaders but slightly lost place at halfway before plugging on best of the stragglers to take second. Put up a poor performance similar to the earlier seller winner. Need to win early in modest company.
  • ANGELINA BANKES
  • 12/1 despite previous experience and prominent on outside throughout and faded with the group to a remote third probably rating similarly to her debut. Seems exposed as 50s at best and needs to improve to get to that level. In spite of the place another poor run for the trainer in 2005.
  • OOH AAH CAMARA
  • First 2yo runner of season for small stable who has at least two relatively expensive 2yos in 2005. They have both been entered in many races including the Brocklesby and a seller but both were declared here although only this one ran.
  • In a poor to moderate group physically she was among the better types with some size and length. 20/1 seventh favourite and was in touch before fading with group to a remote fourth probably rating lower than the placers in the earlier 2yo seller. Not a lost cause because can develop from this and perhaps reach low 60s rating.
  • HALCYON LODGE
  • Slightly compact, slightly narrow and weak in front although at least has some build to develop. Not fit enough on the day. Received a rating of 64 the same as she had at the sales.
  • Opened 8/1 and drifted to 12/1 before back to 9/1. Performance was below expectations but in line with her fitness and profile on the day. Showed up in leading line to past halfway before fading.
  • Rating of 64 suggests she is limited and an early minor win is probably the target for her owner breeder.
  • RUNDEAR
  • A real disappointment. Most expensive in the field and cost 40k gns but is small, lightly made and did not look ready to race. Looked like a neater version of Agent Kensington from 2004. Started at 11/2 and with each-way support for other runners and the favourite strongly supported the 'vibes' suggested not a lot was expected.
  • Started slightly slowly and got a bump from Ellcon and never got into the race.
  • Looks poor value at 40k and not one to follow. Trainer will have to work to find a minor race for her.
  • ELLCON
  • A slight disappointment given her sales price and likeable pedigree. However the other foals from the dam have been disappointing and this one did not look she had developed from the sales.
  • Rated 70? in a moderate group and rating may have been a little high because of 'trying to find something to be positive about' in the group. Deep in front and ok length but narrow and lighter behind.
  • Looked slightly mentally immature and this showed up in the race with a slow break and went left and bumped Rundear. Got behind before some progress in straight and then fading.
  • Trainer had his best filly (Sapphire Dream) ready to compete well on debut in 2004 and this one did not show similar ability nor readiness. Has a little scope to develop but difficult to see her being 75+. Watch next time.
  • MAGICAL WORLD
  • Had the most build of the fillies but, as noted a the sales, is lengthy and short and lacking the range to move her build.
  • Trainer has his cheaper fillies ready to run to their best on debut and run prominently. Using the rule that how long his prominent runners last up front is a good indication of their ability this one gets a D-. Ran slightly freely but fading from halfway and finished last at 25/1.
  • Trainer's cheaper 2yos do not progress from debut and no encouragement that this more expensive one will break that trend.
  • b) Future Relevance
Not a group that promised solid 70+ rated winners. Glasnas Giant has physical limitations but the each-way support and her performance in doing best of those chasing the winner suggest she has an 'engine'. Her trainer had a similar filly in 2004 who was also his first runner of the season who won an 'H' class auction on debut. That filly ran in Listed races later. This one unlikely to be able to do that but given the early debut should be able to win rating into the 60s.

In a small group Ooh Aah Camara had the most size and can develop to be a 60s rated type.

Neither  Ellcon  nor  Rundear impressed as winners in the near future.
