APRIL 14th SUMMING UP
|
Trainer Chapple-Hyam's two debut runners so far in 2005 have shown
the same pattern as in 2005. They have been competent but not wound-up
and probably not useful types. This runner is of better quality on profile
than those two and should be able to compete to a higher level than they
have.
M Channon is in better 2yo form and debuts have settled down to
be more competent. He tends to introduce an above average type at this
meeting and Zato's sales review suggest he could be similar if he has developed
well.
B Hills has had two previous runners in 2005 that have run with
some promise while never being competitive. His runner here has a similar
profile.
R Hannon has two cheap buys in the race and only his useful+
2yos have won on debut at Newbury in the period 2002-4 (none from 18 won
in 2004 with a 66/1 second from later Listed winner Screwdriver the best
performance).

RACE QUALITY:
|
The race was run as a conditions race until it became a maiden in 2004
and attracted a bigger field. The maiden race in 2004 was of good quality
with a Group winner in first, a Listed placed runner in second and a highly
regarded colt in 3rd (who only ran once more). The race had average maiden
winners close behind.
When run as a conditions race in 2002 the race attracted runners from a
similar group of trainers as this year but the field were average maiden
winners at best (leaving aside the underlying explanation of how M Channon
managed to get a Group 1 placing with Polar Force. An interesting story
in itself given that Polar Force struggles to win off 60s ratings nowadays).

TRAINERS:
|
M Channon has had a runner in the equivalent race in 2002-4 (run
as a conditions race in 2002-3) and has provided the winner with a debut
runner in 2002 and 2004. Last season's debut winner was with a superior
runner for an important owner (Sheikh Mohammed).
R Hannon has had a runner in the equivalent race in 2002-4.
In 2004 he ran an unplaced runner for The Queen who developed with racing
to win over 6f in later season. He had run previous winners in the race
in 2002-3 when it was a conditions race.
B Hills ran a precocious filly in the race in 2002 that finished
second. She lacked scope to develop and was a 70s rated maiden winner at
best.

No first season sire has a runner.

SALES REVIEWS:
|
Zato was reviewed at the sales and rated 69 with an above average
chance of being a competitive 2yo. He was above average size and with a
good build. However he was notably lengthy and needed to improve his athleticism.
He had scope to develop but looked a just 70+ maiden winner at the sales.
Don't Tell Sue was reviewed at the sales and rated 64 with an above
average chance of being a competitive sprint 2yo. He was an acceptable
size and heavily built. He was notably short with a longer neck. He was
a good mover overall. He looked capable of being an average maiden winner
helped by his maturity but not with strong scope to develop further unless
he grew.
Ocean Pride was reviewed at the sales and rated 63 but with a below
average chance of being a competitive 2yo at his level. He was an ok size
and with solid build but lengthy, shallow and not well developed.
