Pre-race Summary

The 2003-2004 results are at the bottom of the page for comparison
MAY 10th SUMMING UP
  • Takoda has looked a good early 2yo with a change of pace on two runs on softer ground. He is probably limited to just being a 'useful' level but has looked the best of the previous winners and sets the standard here.
  • The other previous winners, including The Bear who carrys the maximum penalty, have not produced similar levels of form. Therefore, the main opposition may come from the two newcomers Art Historian & Fly To Jove
  • Art Historian was due to make his debut at Pontefract which was a less good sign because the trainer normally debuts his better types at Newmarket, Newbury and here. He was a non-runner at Pontefract and now is chosen to debut here by a trainer who tends to introduce average+ 2yos at the meeting. However his FTO runners usually place at best in open maidens and he will need to be useful+ to win here against a good previous winner.
  • Fly to Jove's trainer has had 5 debut winners from 85 2yos since he started training. These wins have been in the period May to early June as he runs his better 2yos amongst the first batch of runners in the season. However, these debut wins have tended to be in lesser races and he would also need to be better than useful to win here.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • There has not been a corresponding race at the meeting in 2003-4. In those years the Novice race was for Fillies only. At this meeting a new fillies' Race has been introduced and this race is now an open Novice. The 5f colt's maiden has been dropped.
  • TRAINERS:
  • P Cole regularly runs newcomers at this meeting. They tend to be better types and often place. They are regularly in the SP range 5/1 to 10/1 and the actual price is not strongly indicative of the overall ability of the 2yo.
  • In 2004 he had a shorter priced (100/30) winner of the 5f maiden on this card. Partly in response to that his runner in the 6f maiden 2 days later was 9/4 and finished well beaten and did not run again. In total in 2004 he ran 6 FTO 2yos at York and 4 placed along with the May win. None of these 4 won later in the season.
  • In 2002-3 he debuted three 2yos at the meeting with the best runner placing at 8/1 and the other two being unplaced.
  • AM Balding has only run three 2yos at the course in his first two years of training and none at this meeting. None of these runners placed and were in lower quality races. He normally runs 2yos in maiden or auction races on debut and not in Novices. He occasionally runs owners bred fillies in conditions race FTO (with no success to date) and ran his best 2yo - Diktatorial - in 2004 in a conditions race on debut.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sire Rambling Bear (The Bear) is represented.
