    MAY 13th SUMMING UP
  • The change from an Median Auction to an open maiden has produced a much better race and with good prospects for some future relevance.
  • Guest Connections made a standard trainer debut in a tough Newmarket maiden at 5f and was outpaced by the bigger and heavier speed 2yos there. He steps up to 6f and is sent north to Hamilton. The trainer has run seven 2yos here for their STO runs in the period 2002-4. The first five of these were moderate to average types and beaten in 2002-3. In 2004 he sent two Sheikh Mohammed owned 2yos who won here on their STO runs. The best of these was an 80ish rated 2yo. Interesting to see how good he is in the longer term but he should improve here and set a good standard.
  • Masta Plasta has a good profile to be able to reach the level that Guest Connections sets. He was highly rated at the sales and is by a sire with a very good 2yo record. His trainer had a FTO winner at this course with his first 2yo runner of 2004 and that runner was his best 2yo.
  • Linas Selection's trainer introduces a range of 2yos in the three weeks from the York Dante meeting onwards and these will include superior 2yos. The best 2yos can win FTO. One of the best of these 2yos in theory made his debut at York yesterday but ran too freely and finished last. He has a 7f+ pedigree and will need to be superior to win on debut in this relatively tough maiden for the course.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • The race has been a Class E Median Auction in previous years and has attracted low quality fields. In the last two years the race has barely produced a later winner. The race has become a Class 5 Maiden this year and has immediately attracted a much better field both in quality and depth.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sire Beckett (Dogbiscuit & Secret Tender) has two runners. He has not had a winner yet.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
  • Masta Plasta was rated 82 at the sales and with a high chance of being a 2yo winner. Very well muscled and notably strong behind, neat and with ok length to use his strength. He needed to strenthen in front but ought to be a useful 2yo.
  • Secret Tender rated 67. Smallish but with heavy. Rather short but probably competitive at 60s ratings.
  • Pappas Ruby rated 63, smallish but with good build. In proportion and unremarkable overall.
  • Skhilling Spirit rated 62, small and below average build.
