Pre-race Summary

The 2003-2004 results are at the bottom of the page for comparison
MAY  31st SUMMING UP
  • A 'two race' profile with Masta Plasta Desert Realm standing out from the others. Both have dropped back to 5f after 6f debuts. Masta Plasta made a very strong debut and a reproduction of that should be enough to win. However further improvement would be expected on his trainer's record in 2004.
  • Desert Realm has changed from being his trainer's preferred '6f 2yo' for the important York meeting maiden to trying to break his maiden at the third attempt over 5f (unlikely that this was the plan three weeks ago). He has a non 5f pedigree and while running acceptably well in an average maiden on softer going at Ripon over 5f he is likely to be vulnerable to better sprinters.
  • Coquet Island has front run in both his races and paid for making a too strong pace last time. He probably has little improvement but should be prominent for the first 3-4f of the race. Of the newcomers Rondo should be assessed for promise for the ability to run to 70+.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • A wide variation in the last two years with the 2003 race an easy edition with a soft odds-on favourite on debut from M Channon (who did not win at 2yo). That race only needed a low 70s rating to win.
  • In 2004 a number of southern based trainers combined to produce a tough race with the winner going on to place in the Coventry Stakes.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
  • Masta Plasta was rated 82 at the sales and with a high chance of being a 2yo winner. Very well muscled and notably strong behind, neat and with ok length to use his strength. He needed to strengthen in front but ought to be a useful 2yo.
  • Royal Song rated 76 and this was seen as an 'at best' and close to the Official Rating he should be able to achieve in early to mid-season. He was neat and slightly small but an obvious, early sprint type. [He has been notably disappointing so far.]
  • Rondo rated 70 and an average chance of being a 2yo winner. Above average size and just above average build although lighter behind. Needed to develop well and come together but a solid chance of being able to rate just over 70.
  • Indigo Nights rated 58 and a slightly below average chance of being a 2yo winner at her level. Just below medium size and notable heavily built. Deep through but weak legged and overall probably too lengthy and barrelly. Did not look in proportion.
