2002 - 2004 Statistics

R. M. Beckett (Lambourn)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Started training in his own name for the 2000 season. Previously worked for J. Fitzgerald, D. Loder and P. Walwyn (rented his yard in 99 when he retired). Therefore had worked for trainers with a wide range of approaches to 2yo rating. Has shown evidence of varying his own approach to 2yo runners as he has been refining his own 'style'. In 2002 he made a conscious effort to get some 2yos ready early and got a number of FTO winners. In 2003 he said he had been disappointed that those early runners in 2002 had not progressed and in 03 went back to taking more time with 2yos.
  • Has settled into style of targeting 2yo winners from July onwards. Runners will not be competitive for win on debut unless they are useful and STO runs are targeted for best runs.
  • However, in spite of the lack of competitiveness on debut most runners (unless very useful) will probably show only moderate improvements in rating after debut. Often runners will run to similar rating level after STO.
  • In line with the debuts being uncompetitive there is very little (or no) correlation between debut SP and performance, nor overall ability. In 2003-04 five of his debuts have started at at 10/1 or less and have produced a solitary placing. His best two runners in 04 started at 12/1 and 14/1 on debut.
