2002 - 2004 Statistics
J. G. Given (Gainsborough)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • He has a non-racing background and trained as Vet. He was assistant to M. Johnston prior to starting training in his own name with 6 hoses at Wolverhampton racecourse in 1999. Went into partnership with Andy Clarke (owner of the stable) and trains his horses along with those from other owners. By 2002 the yard had 80 horses and expanded yard by adding Jim Leigh's neighbouring yard.
  • Stable still has increasing numbers of horses, including 2yos. Has an interesting approach and record with respect to 2yo racing. His record is contradictory in some aspects but there are a number of clearly identifiable features.
  • The stable has run between 30 and 44 2yos in 2002-4 and nearly all of the 2yos in the yard will run during the season although around a quarter will run only once. The table indicates the sources of those runners. The figure in brackets is the number of winners from that group of horses.
  • Sales Price Range Owner Bred
    2002 20 (3) 1.5k to 40k gns 10 (1)
    2003 29 (6) 5k to 60k gns 17 (4)
    2004 18 (4) 7k to 50k gns 21 (2)

  • Given the number of runners, along with the prices and sources the overall return in terms of winners and strike rate could be better. Consider also that in 2003-4 the stable ran 83 horses as 2yos and only one of them rated over 90. It is possible that this is a 'recruitment' issue rather than a training one, if the runners have ability he usually identifies it and they show it on course.
  • His strategy is to to identify the early and natural 2yo types and prepare them to win on debut or STO. The better types will be stepped up to Conditions+ races. A number of the poor runners and 2yo types will run past 3TO. There will be a batch of later season debuts each season which will usually run once or, at most, twice.
  • Following a solid 2003 season he had a poor 2004 with only 6 winners of 7 races. 5 of the wins were at seller/claimer level. This was further indication that he's learnt how to win with poorer types.
  • Identifies those with natural ability and these will debut early and should place FTO with the better types competitive for a win on debut. He is a very good example of a 'Show or nothing' (SON) trainer whereby if his runners do not place on debut they aren't very good and unlikely to win at 2yo.
  • 2004 a slightly untypical season with 3 of the 6 during the season not in the first 6 places on debut. However there were reasons for this anomaly and it is unlikely to be repeated in 2005. It was untypical because the three who were 7th+ on debut were all poor runners (including one nutcase who did what she thought best FTO and won STO). The other two were dropped to low class seller/ H Auction wins (AW) on 7TO and 5TO after solid debuts within their limited ability.
  • Shorter FTO SPs early in season (March to May) are good sign of better runners which he has identified at home. The lack of short SPs early in the season in 2004 were probably a mark of the lack of any useful early types.
  • Part of his contradictory overall record is that while later season debuts are still competent the SP is not correlated to performance. However, the preparation he gives to the runners before they run can lead to long priced wins and places by his horses. This is partly because they are in mixed fields where the other runners are similar later season types but not as well prepared. Think about this list from 2002-4 =  Summitville won at 25/1, First Candlelight 2nd at 25/1, Antediluvian won 20/1, Dakota Blackhills 2nd at 50/1, Sheboygan 3rd at 25/1, Coconut Squeak 3rd at 25/1. Five of the six won during the season and the other ran in the last maiden of the season and had no chance to run again at 2yo.
  • In line with his debut runs being very ready the STO runs tend to improve only by 1-7lbs. Some ran to a lower rating in 2004.
  • The fact that he identifies the more natural 2yos at home means that the winners during the season are more likely to come from the early debuts. The later debuts tend to be very short on 2yo potential and include very few 2yo winners (however see point above about notable exceptions which are difficult to spot in advance). In 2004 for example the last 21 debuts in the season included one winner (who finished 3rd at 25/1 on debut and won STO).
  • His record with nursery runners is now roughly equivalent to his overall strike rate with 3 winners from 32 runners in 2003-4.
