August 22nd Summary :

The Newcastle card planned for the day had been abandoned. Hamilton has passed a Thursday inspection but there will be a further check on the raceability of the track at 7:00am on Friday.
The Newbury card includes the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes which was due to be run at York on Wednesday. The race was re-opened to the originally entered horses to declare as runners again. This has led to a larger field of 13 runners with Art Connoisseur (pen 3lbs), Able Master (entered for the Roses Stakes at York), Master Noverre (originally declared for the 5f Roses Stakes at York), Shaweel, Spin Cycle & Sun Ship declared who were not part of the original field. The pair that are missing from the first field are Peter Tchaichovsky & Weatherstaff.
The Newmarket card includes the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales 'St Leger Sales' race with the field of 20 as it was declared for Thursday. There may be changes because, for example, Klynch is also declared for the Newbury nursery race. This race is for yearlings who were catalogued, and most sold, at the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales (DBS & now partnered with the Irish sales company Goffs and selling in pounds sterling rather than Guineas (which is £1.05)) St Leger Sales which used to be held in St Leger week but was moved to late August last year. This year's sale takes place from Tuesday to Thursday next week at the new DBS facility next to the racecourse. Spectators are welcome to attend the sales and it is an excellent way to see a lot of horses in a short time. Yearlings, for the most part, are well enough developed to be able to 'see' the 2yo that they will become.
The sale targets selling yearlings likely to be precocious, sprint, 2yos and the sales company selects yearlings that will fit this template to allow into the sale. This is partly done through pedigree analysis but also by the yearlings being inspected by their team to assess development, conformation and so forth.

A peculiar day with 70 horses declared who will be on debut. With divisions there are five 7f maidens on the day. A word of warning for those who like to look for eyecatchers in such races and 'watch the video over & over' in that the races will be of varaible quality and might not include anything worth following. For reference here are the results from the two divisions of Newbury's maiden in 2007 on the same day - Result 1 & Result 2 - with a couple of minor later winners in each. Two of the four won 3TO & two 4TO and opposing the whole of the fields in later races would have been a good strategy.
More quality on display at Newmarket last year with the fillies' race (Result) and colts version (Result) having more later winners. The race for the males was particularly good with 7 later winners from the 13 runners along with another in the non-runners which also included Duncan & Perks who have made names for themselves as 3yos.
Obviously a lot of stories but this is a chance to note the frustration with the Clive Cox debuts, and 2yo season, to date which he no doubt feels. So far this year he has run 12 horses for no wins while this time last year the dozen to the same point had won three races of which each was a debut win (one on the equivalent day with last years season behind this one in terms of races run after a late start).
Having seen a lot of this year's runners he seems to have a duff group of 2yos and you would struggle to see much potential in those that have run. The latest disappointment was Decision (Picture) who looked usable to our sales guy last year but has become a compact trundler in the interim on the evidence of his presentation at Newbury last week.
Now, he must have a usable 2yo somewhere and the debut readiness should still be there given we are now into later season. Mr Cox runs Perfect Class (a DBS 'St Leger' sale graduate) on debut in Bath's 5:30 and Ready For Battle for owner John Fretwell in the Newbury 1:10. The second of those is for a 2yo orientated owner who likes strong debuts which Eoghan O'Neill (before their split in March) & the McMahons (father Bryan & now son Ed) supply. Time to watch for signs of a bit more life.
