SUMMARY

==== Pre Race ===

Trainer Hugo Palmer writing a new weekly blog on betfair. Starts this weeks with this general info = "This season will certainly present a new challenge to the yard, with our numbers having doubled to nearly 140 and with getting on for 90 juveniles in the yard now, but as a happy consequence these are exciting times. I won't have a stable jockey, and I'll simply aim to use the best available. Anyway, we will explore our prospects in depth as the season progresses, but before I go through this week's entries, I will quickly run you through our current plans for our established stars. ".

Palmer said the following about Copper Knight = "Copper Knight will hopefully be my first two-year-old runner of the season, and I wouldn't be running him at this meeting if I didn't think that he was ready. He cost only £30k - he is by first-season sire Sir Prancealot, who has had a couple of winners in the past week or so, out of a mare who won over an extended 6f on her debut in France - and will benefit from the experience but he is speedy and sharp, has a good racing brain, and has been a natural from the start. Sutter County was obviously very impressive when winning by nine lengths from a subsequent scorer at Wolverhampton and is clearly the one to beat. But we get 6lb from winners this year - last year Gifted Master was getting only 5lb from the Brocklesby winner when bolting up - and Sutter County has to prove it on turf as well as giving the weight. If Copper Knight runs badly there will be some long faces here. Of course, the previous winner may be far too good and there is every chance that there will be a couple sharper, but you like to see your first juvenile run well, and I certainly don't think that he will be disgraced.".

=== Post Race ===

Really Strong Pace with Kingscote (overdoing it again) pressing on up the far rail on Jester Spirit and then Makman taking the lead off JS by Halfway to maintain the stiff pace. Those two leaders both fading well back and leaving a 3-way battle between Sutter County, Tomily & Copper Knight who tracked that stiff pace. Those 3 getting tired in the last 1f and that allowed Dream Of Dreams (Frank ridden) to be able to close up to the fading 3 very late on. DoD a huge distance (in normal, non-broken race terms at halfway and driven along). DoD doing a bit more than closing onto faders and has the size to think he a a better quality one. Others outclassed and left behind early by the pace.

Initial reaction is that the first 4 home are a good quality group by the standards of the race. A likeable set.

Quote from trainer Palmer's Betfair blog on April 19th = "I thought our first 2yo runner of the season, Copper Knight, was coming to win his race, only to get leg-weary in the ground. It was disappointing that he got tired but I think that was because his last piece of work had to be on Polytrack, and not grass, because of the weather and that he needed it more than we thought. That can sometimes be the case with working on Polytrack, where the horses tend to have an easier time of it, but he obviously ran a very promising race and I will look to get him out in the early part of next week, at Windsor on Monday or Bath on Tuesday."

Sutter County review

A good race in which a fairly relentless pace from first Jester Spirit and Makman racing before halfway and then Tomily, Sutter and Copper Knight all engaging each other from someway out made it a genuine pace.

Sutter County – Clearly the biggest and heaviest although not much taller than Dream Of Dreams. Looked barrel chested and very fit but somehow a little disappointing on the eye, hard to say why just a tad plain. In the spirit of trying to move my range up 86

Dream Of Dreams – Tall and lengthy with a rangy look about him. Apprehensive in the prelims and seeking solace from his groom. Looked fitter in the flesh than the picture shows and his watery chestnut colour with flashy rear boots made him look less substantial. Tempting to think a better jock might have got him up, although to be fair Frank at least did not hold him up out the back. Certainly a lot more to come as his greenness possibly cost him the race. 85

Tomily – Stocky solid little chap, ran a professional race. This is probably as good as he is, but should win a maiden. 77

Copper Knight – Two handlers and snorting when he arrived in the pre-parade but immediately took the eye. Same height and length as Tomily but something a touch more eager and athletic about him. Did very well to mix it with SC and Tomily given their experience, his lack of race craft showing through in an awkward head carriage when asked to take it up. 79

Vinnievanbaileys – Another surprisingly big one for this time of season, carrying plenty of condition but with enough presence to think that he may have a race in him. 73

Heavenly Cry – Mousy little chap 60

Makman – Stupid ride from Hanagan, hard to figure what on earth the plan was. Makman a half size smaller than Tomily but similar build with a little less quality. 70

Jester Spirit – Smallish, not as plain as Heavenly Cry but still looked a class below the first 4. 64
