Pre-race Summary

The 2003-2004 results are at the bottom of the page for comparison
APRIL 30th SUMMING UP
  • An interesting edition of the race with two runners from bigger southern stables and a $400k newcomer for M Johnston.
  • The two southern runners both run for astute trainers who know how good their 2yos are and choose appropriate races to achieve wins. The fact that they go up to Hamilton suggests they are probably limited to being average maiden winners. Of the two Salut D'Amour has the better profile in a number of areas. She should be suited to the uphill finish if she can keep in touch downhill in the first half of the race.
  • Lava Flow's behaviour on his debut was a notable negative and he needs to calm down and develop a little physically to reach his potential.
  • Global Warning presents the usual conundrum with debut runners for his trainer. If he's a superior type then he could win this on debut and he has the profile to be that standard. However the earlier debut before the York Dante meeting suggest he may be below that level. If he is 'only' useful then this race is a tough test on his debut with a good opponent in Salut D'Amour.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • The race is of variable quality but regularly attracts average or better types. The 2002 race saw Dazzling Bay beat Royal Beacon and the first 3 in 2004 were average or better winners.
  • The 2003 was of lower quality and with that drop in quality came a longer priced winner and none of the runners achieved a 70 rating in the season.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sire Bertolini (Howards Prince) has a runner, he has had two winners to date.
  • PADDOCK & SALES REVIEWS:
  • Salut D'Amour was reviewed at the sales and rated 73 with an above average chance of being a competitive 2yo at her level. She was a good size and with above average build. Deep in front and powerful behind although slightly weaker in front. She looked capable of being an above average winner in the season without looking obviously superior given her price.
  • Lava Flow (Windsor) rated 70 and not obviously 70k gns worth. Good size but lacks build, especially in front. Needs to develop and tighten up. However, the biggest problem was his behaviour. He is slightly mentally immature and was nervous and wound-up at Windsor. He ended up looking 'gone inside' himself (always a bad sign) and sweating on his neck (which he held 'crested' a lot of the time). Until his behaviour settles down he isn't going to realise his potential.
