MAY 8th SUMMING UP
|
A good edition of the race which probably lacks the high class runner of
the previous three races. However, it is more competitive with three
good winners and a good prospect in King Malachi.
King Malachi opened as favourite on debut which is unusual for trainer
2yos and the 'vibes' suggested he was 'good'. However his debut run was
a typical educational one and perfectly acceptable by trainer standards.
His jockey looked happy with third and nothing to suggest 'today's the
day'. His sales review suggested a solid type capable of rating around
80 if he developed his athleticism. He should improve notably from his
debut and comes out top on profile receiving weight from the previous winners.
The previous winners have looked limited to being average to just above
average level. Lyrical Blues gives 5lb and more to the other runners
and his level of form suggests this will be beyond him. The best of the
previous winners may be More Time. He is the only previous front
runner in the field though so is he adopts this role again he may set the
race up for King Malachi and possibly Green Pride.

RACE QUALITY:
|
The race has been won by high class early season winners in the last three
seasons who have all been odds-on. All three have won comfortably to some
extent from fields containing average previous winners. The performances
have varied from 83-92 ratings.
|
TRAINERS:
|
R Hannon won the race in 2002-3 with colts who won their first three
races and then struggled in Group class afterwards. Both were odds-on favourites.
In 2004 with a high class runner - Blue Dakota - in the field he ran two
maidens rather than previous winner Canton.

SIRES:
|
First season sire King Charlemagne
(King Malachi) is represented by his only British runner so far.

PADDOCK & SALES REVIEWS:
|
More Time was reviewed at sales and rated 75 with an above average
chance of being a competitive 2yo. Should be able to rate 80+ mid season.
King Malachi rated 74 with just an average chance of being a strongly
competitive 2yo. He was small but with an above average build and good
muscle. He was deep but dumpy and not particularly active at the sales.
Likely to be limited by his size. Noted that the previous foal (Umniya
& rated 85 at 2yo) had been similar at the sales.
Green Pride (Windsor) rated 70. Not a particularly taking type and
a surprise to see him second favourite and preferred to Green Park. Has
grown well from the sales but not put on muscle in front, narrow overall.
On the positive side he's mature and ready although not with strong scope
to develop. Lacks quality overall.
Lyrical Blues was rated 68 at the sales with reasonable size and
build but slightly narrow. He was seen as having a good chance of being
an early winner.
