Pre-race Summary

MAY 12th SUMMING UP
  • A good edition of the race with two solid winners and some potential amongst the other runners although not likely to be a Royal Ascot winner in the Group.
  • Glenmuir has always looked on profile to be a 6f+ runner and in that context his performances over 5f have been very encouraging. He should improve for 6f and has a strong profile for this race despite his 7lb penalty.
  • Zato is also penalised 7lb for his 5.3f win and he needed most of that extended 5f to get on top. He has achieved less than Glenmuir over 5f and has shown less basic pace.
  • Tent  & Golden Alchemist both have the potential to be average winners at least but would need to be useful+ to beat the previous winners on debut.
  • Royal Song is one of a small number of 2005 2yos on the list of "Certain 2yo winners" as assessed at the sales who have gone to trainers who are definite negatives for their handling of 2yos. Even by the trainer's standards he made a rotten debut here over 5f on softer ground. He is by a sire who has had two STO winners in 2005 on firmer ground after they had made moderate debuts on softer going (Royal Applause). It would be nice to see Royal Song show that he still has some of the ability he appeared to have in this race. However, his trainer has not had a 2yo placed on their STO run since an AW winner in 2002.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • It's position as one of the first 6f Novice races means that it is usually a good class race, often with a useful or superior 2yo supported by a number of average winners. A rating over 75 is normally required to win.
  • In 2002 the Royal Ascot winner Revenue was beaten into second on his third run. In 2003 an active market saw 'whispers' for both Three Valleys (Coventry winner) & Clifden (Italian Group 3  winner later). Three Valleys produced a useful performance to win comfortably.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sires Distant Music (Tent) & Mull Of Kintyre (Aboyne) are represented.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
  • Royal Song rated 76.
  • Getbuzzin rated 71.
  • Tent rated 70.
  • Zato rated 68.
