MAY 15th SUMMING UP
|
An excellent race in profile and well above the overall quality of the
previous three years. Representatives from the stables of S Suroor, J Gosden,
P Cole & J Noseda added to the usual set of R Hannon, M Channon &
B Meehan have produced a race of some depth.
The fillies with the best previous form have similar stories. Oceans
Apart & Abbielou made what looked promising debuts in a
Newmarket maiden. They then both got beaten as odds-on favourites on the
same day at different meetings. Both are small fillies and although they
seemed to underperform they looked to be beaten by plain better types.
After breaks they reappear here with Abbielou poorly drawn and blinkered
for the first time. Oceans Apart is better drawn but looks less of a 5f
prospect but should be keeping on stoutly at the finish.
Rapsgate also made a promising looking debut in a Newmarket maiden
and is the first test of that form. She looked a solid early 2yo sprinter
at the sales and ought to have a little more scope at 5f that the other
two fillies and with a usable draw sets a good standard.
The best of the newcomers ought to be the well drawn Perfect Beat.
Her trainer took over the Godolphin 2yos training in 2004 and produced
a good record. The debut runners tend to be fit and competent. The earliest
debuts in 2004 were mostly natural 2yos and with prospects of going to
Royal Ascot.
Duelling would probably need to be competitive in the Queen Mary
to win on debut for her trainer. She's well drawn and if she's good she
should be prominent from the start so we'll soon know.

RACE QUALITY:
|
A wide variation from year to year. The 2002 race was almost devoid of
even average quality. The last two races have been made up predominantly
by moderate fillies but brightened by the high quality of the winners.
In 2003 the Royal Ascot winner Silca's Gift was a comfortable winner. In
2004 the Salsa Brava was a rare FTO winner for her trainer and went on
the finished third in the Queen May at Royal Ascot.
|
TRAINERS:
|
R Hannon has had a runner in the last three races. All have placed
including two seconds with fillies on debut bred by The Queen. Of the three
only Godsend was an average level winner in the season.
S Suroor has his first 2yo runner of the season. His first runners
in 2004 were at a similar time of the season at the York Dante meeting.
He had 4 debuts in May and the two York debut were beaten and won STO before
the end of May. The other two debuts included one FTO winner and one very
disappointing filly who was an expensive US 2yo buy. Two of the four ran
at Royal Ascot but were useful types rather than the stable 'stars'.

SIRES:

First season sires Bertolini
(Abbielou & Bella Bertolini), Distant
Music (Distant Mind) & Mozart
