MAY 17th SUMMING UP
|
Just an average maiden on profile and unlikely to be a high class, or even
useful runner in the field.
John Claude has looked limited to around a 70 rating and performed
below that level at Brighton. He made some minor problems for himself there
by being mulish before the start and getting involved in a minor duel for
the lead. He is unlikely to improve greatly but sets a reasonable standard.
Mr Sandicliffe is the first debut runner for his trainer following
his first four earlier season runners. Three of those four have won (one
on debut) and Laith was beaten as favourite STO three days ago. The 2yos
he introduces between mid-May & early June tend to be average winners
or better. As a group they tend to need their debuts and only subsequent
Royal Ascot winner Whazzat has won on debut in that period. On profile
he's more likely to be the 'average' type but ought to make the first four.
Scooby Dude made a typically 'ready' trainer debut in a moderate
race at Chester (despite it's Class 3 status) and finished just in front
of known 'claimer' level types. He is unlikely to show much progress here
and his will probably be poor value given the "2" in front of his name.
It will be a regular occurrence with his trainer's early debuts that in
a race where a 20/1 placer would be no great surprise that Ochre Bay
would be less of a surprise than most.

The race was run for the first time in 2004. It was won by later Royal
Ascot winner Chateau Istana from two runners that show average form or
just above. The remainder of the field was moderate or worse and none rated
