MAY 18th SUMMING UP
|
A fascinating edition of the race and with prospects of having some solid
future relevance unlike the previous two runnings. Overstayed made
a quite impressive debut in soft ground at Ripon but in a slow time. The
subsequent performances of those in the Ripon race, including his own in
the Lily Agnes, suggest that was just average form. He is likely to show
a better rating than his last run but does not set a strong standard and
it seems very likely that some of the others have more potential. He also
has to give 5lb+ because of his penalty.
Angaric looked a typical smallish 'Pivotal' at Carlisle but also
looked to have the good engine that the sire puts into a lot of his 2yos.
His trainer appears to have his 2yos well forward for their debuts this
season following a late start. He needs to show average improvement from
a trainer debut to set a good standard here.
However, Scotchman and in particular Pacific Pride are newcomers
who might be good enough to challenge Angaric. Pacific Pride's trainer
introduced a useful 2yo at Hamilton last week who put up a performance
which would have won a race of this type. The market should be informative
on this particular occasion. The trainer had a moderate debut 4 days ago
which was 18/1 and the vibes were right again.
Scotchman runs for a trainer who doesn't target strong debuts despite his
'shrewd' reputation. Avoiding the 'punts' on his debut runners since he
started training would have been the right call overall. This 2yo be more
forward that an average trainer debut because he was a breeze-up buy and
is owned by Sheikh Mohammed's son. The owner targets 2yo racing and in
general seems to like his 2yos to be competent and mostly ready on debut.
But worth considering the FTO performance of the filly Rubyanne for the
same owner at this time in 2004. She was 5/1 and supported in a similar
Novice race but lost eight lengths with a slow start although was still
in touch before fading in the last furlong. Scotchman would need to be
more of a 'natural' than Pacific Pride to win on debut given his trainer's
usual methods.

RACE QUALITY:
|
Usually a small field and often an uncompetitive race with a better winner
able to beat the more limited early season winners and newcomers. The quality
of the race is variable and has been dependent in the last two runnings
on trainers T Easterby & M Johnston for a better type. Neither of the
last two runnings of the race has produced a subsequent winner in the season.

SIRES:
|
First season sire Bertolini
(Triskaidekaphobia) & Mull
Of Kintyre (Mullaad) have runners.
