Littledodayno did not impress physically at Windsor and is still
the same neat, slightly narrow and unremarkable type she was at the sales.
33/1 there she showed good professionalism to get into the first five by
the end of the first furlong from a poor draw. Made progress against two
experienced runners in the last furlong there and steps up to 6f.
The trainer targets STO wins and often sends them North to look for weaker
races. She probably has limited development but sets a standard that would
require an above average debut from a newcomer to beat.
Aspen Falls, Blushing Hilary & Foreplay all have prospects
of being as good as Littledodayno in time but seem unlikely to reach the
70+ level required to challenge her on their debuts. However, strong market
support for Blushing Hilary (whose trainer has a good idea of the ability
of his debut 2yos this year) and/or Aspen Falls (who may be useful given
the early debut) would, in this instance, be a positive indicator.

TRAINERS:

M Prescott has his first runner of the season. He is notable for
starting his first 2yos in a batch (probably over 7-10 days). The start
date varies but is usually some time in July although in 2003 he had a
number of debuts in June. These were all minor winners.
He strongly assesses the 2yos before they run and will already have a good
idea of their ability and a plan for them. The best will be targeted for
his occasional FTO wins and will generally start at shorter (less than
5/2) SPs. The average winner 2yos will tend to make reasonable debuts finishing
between 3rd to 8th depending upon the strength of the race.
He will also have identified a number of runners that need longer distances
and/or time to develop. They may well make debuts over distances too short
for them and therefore can get low Official Ratings so that they can be
developed through handicaps. A number will have three runs at 2yo to prepare
them to run up those strings of wins he gets with 12f+ 3yo handicappers
as they rise through the weights.
The earliest runners each year will include most of the winners (of various
quality). In 2002 the first ten runners all won during the year with the
later 16 debuts producing no winners. In 2003 7 of the first 8 debuts were
winners (the other placed) out of 10 winners in total. In 2004 it was 10
of the first 12 debuts.
He does not target FTO winners other than occasionally with better types
that can rate 70+ FTO. His first runner in 2002 & 2004 were winners
at 2/1 & 11/4 at Wolverhampton.
B Smart made a late start to the season with his 2yos but appears
to have a number of average, or better types. He has run six 2yos so far
with 2 winning on debut (both winners again STO) with three others placed
on debut. All have looked fit and prepared to run to a high level within
their ability FTO. He runs Blushing Hillary.
E Dunlop has a moderate record overall with 2yos not helped by training
a range of moderate Maktoum family owner breds. The last three seasons
have shown poor and decreasing numbers of wins possibly due in part to
illness in the stable.. At times it has appeared he has tried to improve
the record but with limited success.
He is notable for getting very rare debut winners. However, he has had
three second places from four FTO runs to date. One has won STO. His earliest
debuts tend to compete a little better than his average (being more natural
2yo runners) but the record suggest some combination of a better group
and/or better readiness.
