JUNE 16th SUMMING UP
|
An interesting edition of the race and with reasonable prospects of having
some longer term significance in line with the last two runnings. Elusive
Warrior & Zavone both have solid debut runs from which
to progress from and with just average improvement will set a standard
that will require a useful+ newcomer to better. Elusive Warrior ran in
the slower division of a usually important maiden at Newbury. Although
the time was slower and the favourite failed the last two weeks have shown
that although the form was moderate the first 6 were probably average or
better. He finished fourth and the trainer normally targets STO runs for
close to peak rating.
Zavone made a slightly inexperienced debut over 5f only 7 days ago and
showed just acceptable promise. The trainer has used this race to introduce
useful 7f+ 2yos in the last two seasons so he does not fit that mould.
With the experience he should be competitive but has a less good overall
profile.
The newcomers include three who have the potential to be better class 2yos
but all run for trainers that do not target strong debuts. Each would need
to be better than useful to beat those with experience and to show above
average professionalism. Nawaqees is very well related and has a
pedigree that could produce anything up to Group 1 class. His trainer had
a 16/1 FTO winner yesterday who actually ran a fairly typical trainer debut
in what was probably not a strong race. The other debuts have finished
3rd-6th showing promise but not ready enough to compete.
Of the others Acheekyone's trainer has tended to run more above
average 2yos than moderate ones at this particular course and West Of
Amarillo makes a relatively early debut which is a good sign.

RACE QUALITY:
|
A well above average maiden in the last two seasons with the 2003 race
notably strong with the later Group 2 winner Byron winning from the (promoted)
Group 1 winner Balmont and with Sgt Pepper third who won at Listed level.
2004 was unsurprisingly not as high class but the first two ran in Group
races alter (unplaced) and the third won a later Conditions race.
The first maiden of the year run on the July Course and a number of trainers
have used it as a 'marker' to debut better types.
