JUNE 28th SUMMING UP
|
Not a taking group overall and those that have run have shown some combination
of inexperience and lack of pace and most would seem to need a stiff 7f
as a minimum. This faster 7f does not necessarily seem the ideal circuit
for any of them although in that circumstance the ones with the most pace
are likely to do best.
Confidential Lady achieved more than most of the others will
be capable of on her first run and showed reasonable pace to make ground
downhill at Hamilton. The trainer's STO runs have been variable so far
but have produced 2 wins and 5 places from 11 efforts. Those that made
competitive debuts have tended to show at least moderate improvement. Well
drawn and in a field lacking pace she ought to be able to get to a prominent
position early and set a strong standard.
Fenners also showed a bit more snap and gumption than the others
on his debut although his lack of pace was shown up by two smallish fillies
on a flat track. He didn't convince as being best suited to a sharp, turning
course like this but ought to be ok in a limited field like this.
Daedel, Under My Thumb, Little Eyecatcher & Mambo Sun
all have similar profiles. They all got well behind in 6-7.5f races but
plugged on into the midfield and/or faders late in their races. Because
they appeared to be 'finishing' its possible to take a rosy view of some
of the four of them. However, the obvious question is what were they doing
that far back in the first place? This isn't normally the course for this
type of 2yo to be able to 'outlast' other slow ones. They all finished
amongst moderate types and would need to make well above average improvement
if Confidential Lady performs to expectations.

RACE QUALITY:
|
As with many other northern maidens the better quality in the race comes
from two main sources - M. Johnston and/or southern based stables. M Channon
has won the race twice in the last three years and D Loder & M Jarvis
have provided second places. The Maktoum family and their associates have
provided the last three winners and two of the runners up. Whereas the
majority of the field will be running over 7f+ this early because they
are slow, the Maktoum reps are usually slightly better types who have some
pace and are running over 7f because they are suited to it.
The better types and later winners have always made the first three if
they are in the race and long priced winners rare. This follows from the
wide variety of abilities usually represented.

TRAINERS:
|
M Johnston has had a runner in each of the last three years with
a win in 1993, a second last year and one unplaced.
TD Easterby has run four in the race in the period 2002-4, none
have placed and none have been winners at 2yo. The stable in general targets
2yo sprint racing and has a much better record at 5-6f. In the last two
seasons the stable has had only 4 wins from 144 runs at distances above
6.5f. This probably reflects the fact that most of the stables 7f+ 2yos
either have sprint pedigrees but have proved too slow for 5-6f or are owner
breds with moderate pedigrees.

SIRES:
|
First season sire Beckett has two of the eight runners - Little
Eyecatcher & Mister Becks. Superior Premium is represented by
Mambo Sun.
