1. RACE SUMMARY

a) Performance Comparison

  • The ground was officially 'Soft with Heavy patches'. The limited and free running Most Famous (dropped jockey to post and delayed race) took the field as fast as her short legs could for just over 3 furlongs. The field closed up and were covered by just over two lengths before one furlong from the finish. The weaker runners stalled or dropped away at this point with Fusili (travelled well with the leader) and Local Fancy (head high to post and throughout the race looking difficult and probably reluctant) keeping on to contest the win. Local Fancy would have won more comfortably if she had been ridden closer to the moderate pace, had not been slightly hampered as she made progress and had been an easier ride at the finish.
  • The race was run in a very slow time and was not a 5f speed test. The shape of the race with the runners bunched coming to the final furlong and the slow time suggest a low level of form where the best runners did not show their full ability.
  • The following table gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. A box in green denotes a runner that exceeded pre-race expectations and in pink a runner that performed notably below expectations. In either case it is useful to try to identify the reason for the difference.

    LOCAL FANCY
  • Drifted slightly from 9/4 to finish 5/2f. Stood out in the group for fitness, maturity and range of movement. Showed a high head carriage to post and throughout the race and did not look an easy ride. Had to be driven at times in the race to hold her midfield position behind a moderate pace on soft ground. The race bunched up coming to the last furlong and she made ground easily but was slightly hampered. Went on with the second but had to be hard driven to give her effort.
  • Would have won more easily if she had been ridden closer to the pace and been more helpful. Has limitations on development but can rate 70+.
  • FUSILI
  • A disappointing type in paddock review, small and underpowered, especially in front. The positives were she was neat and mature and gave a professional performance. Travelled well just behind the moderate pace set by the limited leader. Went on with the winner as the moderate types stalled. Performed to expectations in a slow race that was not a 5f speed test.
  • Her maturity and professionalism should enable her to win early rating in the 60s but not obviously one to follow and always vulnerable to a bigger 2yo.
  • MISS MAXI
  • Not as fit as expected and trainer is possibly slightly changing his approach. Has ok size and build in the group but too compact in set-up.
  • Steady at 11/1 & ran a typical race as volunteer third in a slow race. Can improve fitness but not one to follow and 60s rater probably.
  • PERTEMPS HEROINE
  • Withdrawn after getting loose on debut but behaved acceptably here (where her stablemate delayed the race instead.)
  • Looked a limited 50s type and a moderate fourth in a slow race. No particular interest. Second string of trainer's pair on SP.
  • SUPERIOR STAR
  • Interesting to see him in relation to his trainer's record. His trainer normally has runners fit and competent on debut. However, in recent seasons the earliest debuts, while often placing, have not really been competitive and have often not developed (e.g. Favouring in 2004, Little Jimbob in 2003).
  • This runner did not look physically nor mentally ready to run to his best. In a moderate group he was about the biggest and has some prospects to develop but he needs to.
  • Drifted from 5/2jf to 100/30 and ran a moderate race in a slow race, sitting in midfield and fading back with the moderate types in the last furlong.
  • Has the physical set-up to rate around 70 but needs to tighten up and develop physically and grow up mentally.
  • GEE FOUR
  • Small but with some build and just fit enough on debut. Has prospects to be a minor, 60s rated sprint winner.
  • The second runner for the new trainer and owned by his mother. Backed from 5/1 to 3/1 second favourite. Pressed the limited pacemaker who set a moderate pace on soft ground in a slow race. Poor fade with the limited runners in the last one furlong.
  • The trainer has now had two runners (one for his most important owner and the other for the family) and both have received market support and both have run poor races. His father, later in his career, used to take a 2-3 runs to develop the muscle on types like this and because of their early debuts they could then be competitive in sprint races at their level.
  • SOMETIMES LUCKY
  • Looked a small and limited trundler on paddock review ad the least fit in the group. Ran a moderate race in a slow time. No interest.
  • MOST FAMOUS
  • The second fittest in the group (in line with trainer methods). Has ok build but is too lengthy for her short set up. Gave trouble on debut and again dropped the jockey to post. Once remounted she ran freely to post and then in the race. Set the pace at a free pace (although a moderate rate) for as long as she could on tiring ground before fading to last. Was the first string of her trainer's runners on SP. Can do better but set-up will limit her.

  • 2. PADDOCK REVIEW SUMMARY
    a) RATINGS & SUM-UPS
The table gives the Paddock Review rating for the runners. The descriptions to the ratings is the same as those given in the 2004 Sales rating section.
    Name Rating Sum-up
    Local Fancy
    73
The fittest and most mature in the group. More notably also the best mover with a good range for her size. Very ready type and lacks scope to develop but ought to rate over 70.
    Superior Star
    70?
Did not look mentally nor physically ready. Has some size to develop but needs to tighten up and be mentally more professional. Looked an average winner at best and ought to be able to rate just over 70 if he develops.
    Gee Four
    65
Small (similar to Komac who ran for the same owner in 2004) but with ok build for size. Still slightly unfurnished and needs to tighten up but has prospects to be a 65+ sprinter.
    Fusili
    64
A disappointment. Small and lightly built and not promising that she will grow and develop. The positives were that she is neat, professional and showed good reach and use of her frame (see blurry picture 2).
    Miss Maxi
    60
Ok size and build in context of group and acceptably powerful behind. However, too compact for her height and length of leg which will limit her ability to use her build. Not as fit as expected by comparison with trainer's earliest debuts in previous years. Prospects to be a minor, low 60s rated winner.
    Pertemps Heroine
    57
One of the fittest in the group and medium size although lacking build Lacked athleticism.
    Most Famous
    56
Second fittest in the group. Ok build and muscle but too lengthy and short. Again showed attitude and dropped jockey immediately she went onto course. Taken back to stables and delayed race.
    Sometimes Lucky
    54
Too small but ok muscle given size. Not fit enough to show his best. Can tighten up but limited to lows 50s trundler at best by size.
    b) SIZE AND BUILD
A moderate group overall, better in terms of build than size..
