Pre-race Summary

The 2003-2004 results are at the bottom of the page for comparison
MAY 1st SUMMING UP
  • Peace And Love has a non 5f pedigree and did not show 5f speed on debut. The quality of the form of her debut run is looking questionable with the 2nd and 3rd beaten on their next runs. She would be vulnerable to a strong sprint type on this flat 5f and would probably not be at her best in a race without a strong pace. Likely to be a short price favourite but with some question marks given the form and the fact that she lost ground at the start and hung left on debut.
  • However, unless Assertive is readier than the trainer's normal debut runner it is difficult to see which of the other runners can reach the same level as Peace And Love.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • The race has attracted a range of abilities in each of the last three seasons with a notable 'star' in each year. In 2002 the Royal Ascot winner Baron's Pit was beaten on debut and in 2003 the Doncaster sales race winner Cape Fear was a good winner FTO.
  • 2004 saw a good race with Turnkey winning by 11 lengths in heavy ground. However, the star was trundling home in third - the Breeder's Cup Juvenile winner Wilko.
  • TRAINERS:
  • R Hannon has used the race for a variety of types in 2002-4. In 2002 the later Group3 5f winner was surprisingly beaten on debut by. and in 2003 he ran a filly who had failed on debut and won over 5f later. In 2004 he ran two on debut who both proved moderate non-winners.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sires Fantastic Light (Peace And Love), Fruits Of Love (Strong Approach) & King Charlemagne (King Malachi) have runners.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
  • King Malachi rated 74 with just an average chance of being a strongly competitive 2yo. He was small but with an above average build and good muscle. He was deep but dumpy and not particularly active at the sales. Likely to be limited by his size. Noted that the previous foal (Umniya) had been similar at the sales.
  • Assertive rated 71 with an average chance of being a strongly competitive 2yo. He was just above average size with a good build in front although lighter behind. He was very mature, especially in front and this was a notable positive.
