MAY 11th SUMMING UP
  • A very interesting race featuring two colts who made good impressions on debut and should show improvement here. Assertive looked a likeable type at the sales but needed to develop to fulfil his potential. He appeared to have done this when showing strong progress in the middle of his race on debut after losing ground at the start. He moved through smoothly to lead before lack of fitness led to a late fade and a race fit rival rallying to head him. The strength of that form is questionable but he left a good impression.
  • Sunrise Safari drifted to 66/1 on debut for a trainer who is developing a record of getting long priced wins & places with his 2yos on debut (3 from 6 in 2005, 1 from 2 in 2004). He ran a race of solid promise showing a good finish although in a slow race on soft. He may lack the basic pace of Assertive and have a little less improvement but should be able to rate 70+ here. His debut third looks better in light of the subsequent wins of the two that finished in front of him.
  •  Bel Cantor should provide a solid 'marker' but his run in the Lily Agnes did not suggest any particular future promise. He was unable to make any use of a good tracking position in the later part of the race. His run is the first test of that form.
  •  Ajigolo comes into the race as slightly 'damaged goods' having got worked up in the stalls on debut, still being leant against the superstructure when they opened and fell out and never got into the race. He has the potential to be as good as the first two on profile here but given the debut antics has been kept at his previous rating.

    RACE QUALITY: 
  • Usually a strong maiden and takes a performance over 70 to win. The 2004 race was divided and the soft ground meant that the races were draw affected to some extent.
  • The 2003 race included Listed winner Nyramba, 95+ rated Spliff, Supersprint winner If Paradise, Group placed Nights Cross plus a number of average later winners.
  • The 2004 Division 1 had the Group winner Galeota beaten as odds-on favourite and 95+ rated Obe Gold as the winner.

    TRAINERS: 
  • R Hannon won the race in 2002 and has debuted two superior sprint 2yos in the last two years - Supersprint winner If Paradise & Group 2 winner Galeota. In each year he has also run a moderate second string.
  • M Channon won a division in 2004 with the useful Obe Gold (STO) and had previously run two later winner sin the 2003 race.

  • First season sires Fruits Of Love (Strong Approach) & Mozart (Sunrise Safari) have runners. Neither has a winner to date.
