MAY 18th SUMMING UP
|
A good edition of the race and looks stronger than 2004's race in terms
of depth. Celeritas sets a solid benchmark to judge the over form
by. He showed notable improvement to chase Puskas for 4f at Newmarket after
getting 'lost' in the Brocklesby. He is unlikely to show much further improvement
but sets a good marker.
Sonny Santino made a typical medium-quiet debut for one of his York
first time 2yos. He travelled well and moved through comfortably to take
a solid third without being pressed to chase the first two. With normal
trainer improvement he should rate 80+ here. The niggles are the different
ground, the short break and the overall record of the trainer with his
York debutants STO. Only Tacitus in 2002 has won STO after a York debut
and that was with a two week longer break.
Mulaqat runs for a trainer who usually gets his early runners for
this owner placed and they occasionally win. On the trainer's previous
records it would be surprise not to see this one prominent at the finish.
In a race of good depth a number of others appeal as later above average
winners and should be assessed in that light. Racer Forever, Prince
Tamino & possibly Yasoodd come into this category.

RACE QUALITY:
|
Nearly always a strong maiden and usually with a winner capable of competing
in Group races later. It often requires an 80+ performance to win.
The quality and depth of the 'supporting cast' can vary a little but the
majority of the last three groups have managed to win at some level with
a good number above average.

TRAINERS:
|
M Tregoning (Mulaqat & Sir Percy) has his first 2yo runner of
the year. This is a fairly typical time for him to start - in 2004 he started
three 2yos a week earlier but in 2003 his first runner was the week after
the Goodwood meeting.
He is notable as a 'Show FTO or nothing' type of trainer. He usually has
his debut runners fit, professional and ready to perform to a high level
within their ability and if they do not place, then they are probably moderate.
In 2003 & 2004 his first runner of the season was a winner (15/8f &
5/1). His first five debuts in the last two years have produced 2 wins
and 4 places from the ten 2yos. None of the four that were unplaced won
that season.
H Morrison (Prince Tamino) has his first 2yo runner of the season.
He is a well organised trainer and seems to assess his 2yos before they
run. This is at the earlier end of of his normal debut range but he probably
runs his best and/or precocious 2yos when he can tell they are ready.
It is notable that the earlier debuts in the season are the better 2yos
and the likely winners. In 2003 his first debut was 3rd FTO and an average
later winner and the second debut was Group 3 winner Pastoral Pursuits
who was also third on debut. In 2004 he only had two 2yo winners but the
best of them was his first runner and she won on debut.
