MAY 19th SUMMING UP
|
A tricky race to summarise. As is often the case the majority of the trainers
will be happy with 'nice' introductions. The exception would be H Cecil
with Isis who will have her ready to run close to her best. If she's
average or above that readiness would make her hard to beat in this group.
However, the early debut raises doubts although the market would be a good
indicator in this case. If she's supported at shorter odds that would be
a good sign that she's not moderate.
In these races the better fillies tend to come to the fore as long as there
is a reasonable pace. Hill Of Grace & Sweet Boulangere
both represent trainer's who tend to get places in these open fillies'
maidens and can get occasional wins.

RACE QUALITY:
|
Usually a race of average, or just above, quality. The majority of the
last three groups have been average maiden winners at best and more than
half of them have failed to win in the season.

H Cecil has his first 2yo runner of 2005 with the owner bred Isis.
The stable has been in decline for some years and gets rare 2yo winners.
This is an early start and he has not had a runner until early July in
the last three years.
He is notable for assessing his 2yos fully at home before they run . They
are normally close to full fitness on debut and show little improvement
in later runs. All his wins in the last three seasons have either been
on debut (7 wins) or STO (2 wins). If his runners don't win or place on
debut its almost certain they are poor to moderate athletes.
His earliest debuts in the last three seasons have been a mix of moderate
owner breds and competitive 2yos. The SP has been a good indicator of which
category the runner fits into.
M Tompkins (Emily's Place) has his first 2yo runner this season
at a normal start date. He has had two poor seasons following a good 2002.
His approach to 2yo racing and debuts is notably different to H Cecil.
He does not target strong debuts and only 2 of 41 have placed in
the last two years. SPs are usually 10/1 or longer in line with this. In
2003-4 with a moderate group of 2yos he has had most wins after 3TO (compare
H Cecil who hardly runs a 2yo more than twice).
R Hannon has had a runner in the last three races. He had the second
in 2002 and the winner in a weak race in 2003, both started at 9/2. His
moderate runner in 2004 was unplaced at 10/1.
We are reaching the period when he tends to debut better fillies before
Royal Ascot and the better ones can win. In 2003 Enford Princess won this
race FTO and in 2004 Jewel In the Sand and Dont Tell Mum both won on debut
in this period.
The trainer debuts three in the two 6f Fillies' maidens today. This one
is ridden by P Dobbs. The two at Goodwood are ridden by R Moore and R Hughes.
