2005 Runs Summary
SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Successful trainer with good 2yo record although the last three seasons have shown a decline in the performance with 2yos. This reached a low point in 2004 with only 6 winners and 9 wins although the overall quality seemed similar to previous seasons. A number of runners had only one run so it is possible there was a problem with the stable. If this was the case he should have a good group of runners for 3yo maidens in 2005.
  • The numbers of 2yos has slightly decreased and they are mostly (around two thirds) bought at the sales, with the UK purchases costing between 50k to 100k. The stable also has a number of expensive US sales purchases each year with the 2004 runners ranging from $90k to $220k. The other third of the runners are made up of owner breds most with solid pedigrees.
  • His basic strategy is to win a maiden race within the first three runs and step the better runners up to high-class races. He shows some slight variations on this basic strategy with some runners starting in conditions races.
  • Until the 2001 season he had an above average FTO wins record which was regularly 20% or better. This changed in 2002-3 and he only had 3 FTO wins from a total of 58 debuts. In 2004 he had 4 debut wins from 30 runners although there were unusual reasons for 2 of these wins. His best 2yo was sent to Hamilton to win FTO and another runner won a laughably poor Bath maiden on debut.
  • The number of debut winners is slightly surprising given the quality of his runners and the fact that he has his runners competent on debut. Two related factors may have affected the number of FTO wins. Firstly the number of runners rated over 90 and 100 has decreased in the last three seasons. Secondly most of his debut runs are in good maiden races at better course (Newbury, Newmarket, York, etc.). Therefore his debut runs can run to a high rating and still not be competitive for a win. If those debuts were at lesser courses some would win on debut.
  • FTO SP is only correlating with FTO performance at the very shortest range (less than 3/1). The runners in the last three seasons which have been 5/1 to 10/1 on debut have been very poor value.
  • He is notable in that his earlier debut runners do not tend to include the majority of the season's winners. The earlier debuts can often include a number of runners which have long breaks to their STO run and may not win during the season. In 2004 the first 9 debuts through to May 21st included 5 runners who did not run again and another that had one other run. In 2003 several early runners did not run again or had long breaks to the second run.
  • Relative to thge previous point he has a better record with STO runs that are within 8-14 days of the debut runs.
