Pre-race Summary

The 2003-2004 results are at the bottom of the page for comparison
APRIL 10th SUMMING UP
  • In writing the review of the season so far before this race the fact that most of these early season AW races are won by runners with previous runs resurfaced. In 2005 a similar pattern has occurred with 4 of the 5 AW races being won by runners with previous outings (ignoring the first race of the season). The exception was Azygous who ran for Rod Millman who has his runners readier by far than other trainers in 2005.
  • Therefore Jack It would have to be at least useful and also professional on debut to beat all of the range of runners who have run previously. She has the pedigree to be useful but here trainer's methods would suggest she wouldn't quite be ready to win.
  • However the previous runners are a mixed bag and all have a slight negative at least. Magidene shows strong fades in the last furlong and so has Grimes Faith. Mae Cigan took a long time to get into a slow race on debut and needs to show more natural pace here. Don Peter ran just an acceptable debut without ever showing the pace to compete in a better race.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • The race is class 6 this year and a step up from the 'H' class race in 2004.
  • The early season maiden and auction races at the course tend to be of variable quality but usually take a performance between 55-68 to win although occasionally a better runner like Dusty Dazzler in 2002 can rate over 80.
  • The average race will have only minor winners, and probably AW winners, behind the winner.
  • TRAINERS:
  • Before 2004 trainer M Channon had not used the AW course for debut runs. In 2004 he entered two for early season races and one ran and was a minor 64 rated winner (the other is still running in 3yo maidens now). In 2005 he entered Musselburgh debut winner Wovoka here in March before he ran. He has a much stronger profile runner here.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sire Distant Music has his third runner with - Jack It - who is the most expensive runner in the group and sold for well above his own average.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
  • Magidene was reviewed at the sales and although small was rated an 'at best ' 71 with an average chance of being a competitive 2yo. He has the rating to be a competitive, early 2yo in a race of this quality.
  • Smooch was rated only 58 at the sales with a below average chance of being competitive at her level at 2yo. She was small, lengthy, short and 'boatish'. She was an odd mover behind. In summary a lot had to improve for her to be competitive.
