Pre-race Summary

The 2003-2004 results are at the bottom of the page for comparison
MAY 6th SUMMING UP
  • This year's race seems to lack the wider range of abilities of the 2003-4 editions. On profile the race lacks the better types who outclassed the moderate and lesser types in the last two years.
  • The race is left looking very open with the two runners with placed form just coming out on top. Coquet Island showed acceptable pace to lead at Pontefract and from a good draw should have little difficulty doing the same here. Verite is less well drawn but has shown a similer level of form.
  • Neither Coquet Island nor Verite are likely to set a strong standard and a better quality newcomer could still 'outclass' them. The only likely candidate on profile is Campbeltown who runs for a trainer who has had his 2yos ready enough to win two 'soft' races on debut in 2005 without having them wound up.
  • Two others appeal as longer term prospects whose performances here will be interesting - the fillies Korolieva & Making Music.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • A race that has attracted a very wide range of abilities in the previous two years (three races with a division in 2004). The bulk of the field are usually poor to moderate types who will struggle to win as 2yos and many will run in sellers and claimers.
  • However, in each of the last three races there have been useful or better 2yos amongst the general mediocrities. In 2003 Group 1 winner Milk It Mick lost ground at the start and had to show a lot of his class to reel in the useful Harry Up with 70+ rated winners High Voltage, Wavertree Dream and Fitzwarren spread through the field.
  • 2004's Division II race had the useful and precocious Royal Island as the easy winner with the 95+ rated Obe Gold running through the 'trees' for a distant 3rd on his debut.
  • TRAINERS:
  • A number of trainers that usually have runners are not represented. However, regulars MW Easterby (Little Dunney, Sealed Bid & Lady Fas) and TD Easterby (Making Music, Mullaad) provide five of the 14 runners.
  • R Fahey (Accumulate & Wig Wam Bam) has two runners and presumably P Hanagan will ride the better of the two.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sire Mull Of Kintyre (Campbeltown & Mullaad) is represented. He currently leads the first season sire standings with three individual winners.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
  • Egyptian Lord rated 73.
  • Korolieva rated 68.
  • Making Music rated 68.
  • Sealed Bid rated 64.
  • Fangorn Forest rated 63.
  • Wig Wam Bam rated 56.
