MAY 9th SUMMING UP
|
NOTE: This is the first 6 furlong race of the season. Therefore,
one of the issues to consider is what the trainers of runners who have
already run over 5f were trying to achieve and how this fits in with their
overall strategy.
A difficult race to feel confident about with the top four in the profile
all having negatives. Buzzin'boyzee looked small and limited on
debut but showed a willing attitude to plug on after getting outpaced.
However, the strength of that form has not been fully tested and may be
over-rated. Also, she may not be better suited to 6f.
Fusili presents the most solid profile of the first four and has
looked a good professional and should improve for this step up to 6f. She
is small and lacks scope to develop further though and this type of low
level race in early season may be her best chance to win.
Stephanies Dream had her limitations over 5f exposed last time where
she was easily outpaced and showed a lengthy and high action in front of
a 'galloper'. She got loose at the start but this may not have affected
her final performance greatly. She should be better suited to a 6f 'slog'
but will still be vulnerable to a nippier type on this flat track.
The Snatcher's second on debut was a fluke in a mess of a
race which was the slowest 5f run at Bath in ages. He got behind after
a slow start but probably ran on the better part of the track and his 'finish'
was made to look much better by the leaders slowing to a 'walk'. That form
is notably suspect although he should improve STO for his reliable trainer.

RACE QUALITY:
|
The race is an Auction whereby the race weights carried are related to
the sales price of the 2yo. In previous years this has been a Class F category
and now Class 6.
The race is usually of moderate to average quality and the winners usually
need to rate around 70. For the majority of winners it is the high point
of their season and they are unlikely to win again. Those in behind usually
include a range of minor to average winners who will also probably only
win once in the season. The later winners tend to finish in the first six
places given the range of abilities represented. The fact that it is a
6f race means that the lesser athletes have plenty of time to find it all
too much.

TRAINERS:
|
M Channon has had his runners placed in the last two years, one
on debut and the other STO. Both developed to be winners and rated around
80. He has two newcomers and Upper Hand appears to be the first string
from Eliminator.
M Quinlan won the race in 2003 and had a runner-up in 2004. Both
were on STO runs. He has Fusili in the race who has been given a break
since two early 5f runs.
M Bell is behind his normal schedule in 2005 and has not had one
of his early season wins by a useful 2yo. In 2002 he had a similar start
and had his first winner of the season in this week at York. He has had
winners during this week in each of the last three seasons although only
one of these wins was by a newcomer. Fonic Rock makes his debut here.
