MAY 11th SUMMING UP
|
An excellent edition of the race with the top seven all having strong prospects
to be 70+ rated 2yos and several should develop to be well above that.
As tends to be the case the overall quality of the Aidan O'Brien runner
means that Marcus Andronicus comes out top on profile. However,
the trainer's developing record with 2yos debuts in Britain is only 2 from
7 from 2003 to date. Given that those runners tend to start at short prices
in the longer term they are probably poor value. This runner ought to be
one of his better 'favourite' performances though.
Sonny Santino, Serevi & Leo all cost good prices
at the sales given that they do not have particularly strong pedigrees.
This is usually a good sign because it means they are good physical specimens
(which is what wins races as opposed to 'pedigrees'). All run for trainers
who tend to only get odd FTO wins in this type of race with a superior
and natural 2yo. All three have good longer term prospects.

RACE QUALITY:
|
Usually a high class maiden and requiring a performance in the late 70s,
at least, to win. In the last three years the race has included useful+
later winners amongst the beaten horses. The better later winners usually
make the first 4 to 6 places with the lesser runners well beaten. The one
exception was in 2004 when Wilko finished only 7th among moderate horses
yet became a Grade 1 winner by crossing to the US - how does that work?

TRAINERS:
|
M Johnston has had a runner in the last 3 races and had a winner
(STO) and a runner-up on debut with the superior Pearl Of Love. All three
runners have been at least useful winners.
AP O'Brien ran Amsterdam on debut in 2004 who drifted to 3/1. He
was a maiden winner in Ireland on his next run and beaten in a Listed race
on his other run.
In 2003-4 he has made 7 debut runs in Britain in six different races. 5
of the 7 have been in May producing 2 wins (Evens & 10/1), two places
(3/1 & Evens) & one unplaced (9/2).
His only British debut in 2005 finished third at 13/8f bringing his record
to 2 wins from 7 races.
J Gosden has his first runner of the season. In 2002-3 his first
runners were at Salisbury in the same week of the year. In 2004 he ran
four 2yos earlier in the season (3 for Sheikh Mohammed & one for Cheveley
Park) and they included the useful+ Iceman, Prince Charming & Mystical
Land. He then started the other 2yos at Salisbury as usual.
He has had 3 winners from 20 runners on debut by the end of May in 2002-4.
These three have been at 4/6f (first runner of the season), 12/1 (first
runner) & 33/1 (second string). Other than the 4/6f winner all his
other debuts that started at 5/1 or less in these three years was beaten.
R Hannon has run five 2yos on debut at this meeting and all have
made the first four although none have won. Four of the five have won
as 2yos with three being useful or better.
T Easterby has run four 2yos on debut at the meeting in 2002-4 with
one win (9/4), one second place (16/1) and two unplaced. Two of the four
were useful 2yos and the other two showed 70+ form.
