MAY 14th SUMMING UP
|
A good edition of the race and appears to have a stronger 'middle' than
usual with a number of 2yos with the profile to be average maiden winners.
Sand Cat made an inexperienced debut and looked to lack the pace
for 5f and he steps up to 6f. He did not impress with the way he travelled
in the race and not a great deal happened when he was pressed to make progress.
Despite that he brings the strongest previous form into the race. His trainer
appears not to have his earlier debuts as 'wound up' as he once did and
he should improve STO. However he starts from a moderate 'base level' and
it would seem likely that one or more of the newcomers should be better
than he is.
In Full Cry's trainer has introduced Group class 2yos in the last
two years in the race. He has a pedigree which says he should be better
for 7f+ and with development through the season. However, he has a good
chance of being useful to superior and his class may be enough to compete
well here.
His owner had the stable's Desert Realm well beaten at York earlier in
the week and that 2yo was seen as a marker for the trainer's 2yos. He was
showing up as well as any 6f+ type so his performance at York was
seen as an indicator of the other 2yo's merit. He ran much too freely at
York and faded by 2 furlongs from the finish so we did not find out how
good he is. However, we probably know that In Full Cry is not as good in
his work at home.
In a race which looks stronger than usual the following list all appeal
as being capable of 70+ form in the season - Imperial Sword, River
Logic, Royal Punch, Ludovico & Grand Opera.
Other than the pair of River Logic & Grand Opera who both run for H
Johnson the others run for trainer sho either have not got going with their
2yos or do not target debut wins.
Market support for Imperial Sword and/or Ludovico would be informative.

RACE QUALITY:
|
The race typically attracts a big field and with a huge range of abilities,
heavily weighted towards the poor to moderate 2yos. However, there is normally
at least one useful 2yo in the field and the odd later average madiden
winner. With the usual good pace at the course the fields tend to get spread
out by the finish with the better 2yos coming to the fore.
The last two seasons have seen superior 2yos win by long margins and rated
80+ in doing so.

TRAINERS:
|
M Johnston has introduced high class 2yos in the last two races.
In 2003 the later Group 3 placed Chester Le Street 'blew up' and finished
4th after trying to keep up with a fitter Sabbeeh. In 2004 Hearthstead
Wings comfortably dealt with a lesser field.
The trainer uses the period from the York Danter meeting onwards to run
some of his better 6f+ 2yos. Only the very best tend to win on debut.
