1. RACE SUMMARY

a) Performance Comparison

  • A difficult race to assess with a range of runners failing to give their expected level of performances. The first and third had been beaten Gamble In Gold and Ajigolo last time and were more than 5L ahead of them here. The race has been rated assuming the first three ran close to the expected level.
  • The later 5f Fillies' maiden was won by a runner who ran on the far rail throughout and recorded a time only 0.8secs slower and carrying 1lb more than Salut D'Amour. That race had two newcomers who showed inexperience (one looking unrideable for a lot of the race) finishing close up in 3rd & 4th. Upgrading the rating of this race to 100+ to try to explain the 5L gap to the 4th would mean that La Chunga & Gilt Linked performed to a surprising level on debut.
  • The pace did not seem to be an issue which would cause the poor performances by some runners. One probably contributory factor was the draw with the first three racing within 4-5 widths of the rail (Northern Empire widest) and those that raced midtrack never looking likely to get into the race (in particular Memphis Man & Gamble In Gold who bumped after 2f and GIG lost ground and dropped behind.
  • The following table gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. A box in green denotes a runner that exceeded pre-race expectations and in pink a runner that performed notably below expectations. In either case it is useful to try to identify the reason for the difference.

    2. PADDOCK REVIEW SUMMARY

    a) RATINGS & SUM-UPS
The table gives the Paddock Review rating for the runners. The descriptions to the ratings is the same as those given in the 2004 Sales rating section.
    Name Rating Sum-up
    Northern Empire
    85
  • Above medium size and heavy build. Mostly in proportion with a short, strong neck. Mature but room to develop and tighten. Strong in front and ok range to his movement. A useful+ sprinter at least and can develop to 95 rating.
  • Broke a little slowly & settled 2nd rank off the solid pace to halfway around 5 wide of the rail in a race where the far rail seemed an advantage. Travelling well at halfway and went clear with Sunrise Safari & Salut D'Amour from 2F out as the weaker rail runners faded and none of the centre tracked progressed.
  • A little outpaced by Sunrise Safari who went a length clear. Kept on but Salut D'Amour produced a better finish. Has now been picked off in the last half furlong in uphill finishes in both races. Looks the type to better allowed to get into a fast rhythm on a flat track rather than being ridden for a 'finish'
  • Ajigolo
    84
  • Above medium size and heavy build. Similar type to Northern Empire but a less strong in front and with a longer, slightly weaker neck although probably more powerful behind. Sire typical. Slightly mentally immature. Ought to be able to rate 90+.
  • Broke a little slowly and raced 6+ wide off he rail in a race where those closer to the rail seemed to have an advantage. In 9th more than 2L off the leader after a furlong. Some progress to midfield 2L off the leader at halfway. The first three pressed on from there but he showed no response and faded and the jockey did not persist.
  • A flat run and below his best (he beat the 3rd here comfortably on debut). No obvious excuse and although a little mentally immature his behaviour was no obvious problem before the race.
  • Bertie Southstreet
    82
  • Biggest in the field but not as compact and heavy as some of the more obvious '5f sprinters' in the field. Less well built than Ajigolo for example but a better, rangier, mover. Looked better here than at Windsor (sunny as compared to a rainstorm). Wearing a cross noseband. Still looks to need 6f+ but can develop to high 80s rating at least.
  • Slowest break and pick up in the field and in last 3L+ off the lead after a furlong. 5L behind at halfway and raced well off the rail and this a probable disadvantage. Made ground through the stalled runners to fourth as the first three went clear from 2f out and the only runner to make notable progress in the centre track.
  • Ran below expectations but the slow start and racing off the rail would contribute to that. However he does not look a real 5f runner and liekly to be outpaced by nipper types over that distance. [As a general comment his sire has had a lot of runners over 5f but only three winners and one of those was outpaced in a similar Listed race later in the week before plugging on for second.]
  • Sunrise Safari
    79
  • An interesting type and different from the more classic sprinter types in the field (Memphis Man for example). Shows more speed than his setup and build would suggest but probably has limitations in being able to compete at higher class.
  • Medium size and solid build in front but slightly lengthy and more lightly built behind. Slightly narrower than the average in the group. The fittest in the field and with less scope to develop than the more heavily built types.
  • Well drawn one off the rail and broke well and just led after 1 furlong. Set a solid pace to halfway and then went clear from 2f out with Northern Empire & Salut D'Amour as the weaker runner near the rail faded (the wider drawn runners made no progress). Showed more pace than the other two an went a length clear into t he final furlong and looked the likely winner. Faded in the last half furlong and picked up by the other two.
  • Had advantages here of track position, fitness and best place to start the sprint for home. But shows notable speed and can rate high 80s.
  • Mr Rooney
    78
  • Just about medium sized and with above average build. Slightly short and a little lengthier than ideal. Good, rangy mover. Ok for mid 80s ratings but unlikely to be better than useful.
  • 10/1 to 12/1. Broke second best and within a half length of the lead 3 off the rail (an advantage to be close to that rail) at the end of the first 1f. In second place a neck off the leader at halfway but soon under pressure and unable to go on with the first three. Faded from 4th to 9th in the last 1f+ off a usable pace. No obvious excuses and just beaten by better runners.
  • Salut D'Amour
    77
  • Medium size, very powerful behind but weaker in front. Looked to be growing and needing to tighten up still.
  • Ran above expectations but had advantage of running near the rail and a well judged ride from Fallon (who seems to get horses to produce finishes that others don't). Broke ok but settle in midfield 2L+ off the pace after 1f and 2-3 off the rail. Travelled well and made progress at halfway. Pressed on and went clear with Sunrise Safari and Northern Empire as the weaker pacesetters faded and nothing made progress in centre course.
  • Showed a faster leg action than Northern Empire and took a length from him in the last furlong.
  • Was unable to show this finish at York on softer ground where she made minor ground before halfway. Probably helped by the stiff track and the better ground. Can progress a little further.
  • Memphis Man 77
  • Just below medium size but with a heavy build. Fairly standard ready sprinter with limited scope and slightly limited by his size.
  • Gamble In Gold
    75
  • Medium size and solid build in front although lighter behind. A little compact and a ready, medium sprinter with limited scope. Appears to be the best of his early 2yos and capable of 80s ratings but unlikely to develo0 through the season.
  • 100/30 favourite with some support. Broke 3rd best but taken back and settled 2L off the pace after 1F. Ran in mid course which seemed a disadvantage. Got a bump and slightly squeezed out between Silver Crest & Memphis Man after 2f and drop behind them and lost momentum. No response when asked to quicken 2f out as the leaders on the rail pressed on.
  • Silver Crest
    69
  • Rated in the 50s at the sales but has improved his muscle and although still small is a neat little sprinter with above average build, ok length, depth in front and power. Rating uprated and ok to rate just over 70.
  • Smooch 68
    Figjam
    64
  • Smallest in the group although a neat type and acceptably muscled. Always limited by his size.
  • Miss Dagger
    64
  • Smallish, compact and leggy. Fit enough on debut but probably limited to a 60s sprinter. Withdrawn at the start after refusing to be loaded into the stalls.
