Race 312 : Newmarket, July 7th : 7f Nursery (3)

The target with Nursery races is to identify those runners which have got in with an Official Rating which does not reflect their full ability. The [Profile] rating reflects the view of what the horse should be capable of given not just previous form but also physical reviews and trainer strategies. The figure in the [Difference] column will indicate how 'well in' the runner appears to be at the weights. Remember that this is a basic rating based on physical capabilities and will not include subtleties like draw, going and trainer form.

[Estimate]
1.  King Malachi 87 79 -8 Rated 74 at the sales but with the scope to develop to 80-85 rating. Comfortable winner on an easy 6f but set a strong pace over 6f LTO and faded. Reasonable OR in the context of the race. 63
2.  Cape Presto 85 75 -10 65
3.  Don't Tell Sue 84 76 -8 Steps up to 7f from 5f after a break from a disappointing run in the Lily Agnes. Looked a 70s rater at the sales and a reasonable OR relative to the others if can show debut form. 40
4.  Wovoka 81 64 -17 58
5.  Rising Cross 80 65 -15 75
6.  Johnny The Fish 79 66 -13 73
7.  Power Broker 77 75 -2 Rated 79 at the sales and ought to be capable of slightly better than his actual OR77. Has left a strong impression of being mentally immature in his races so far and lacking pace at the end of 6f races. Seems to have been given a competitive OR on what he's already achieved and has the potential to improve if he's mentally more hardened. 65
8.  Norman Beckett 74 60 -14 Good promise on debut but then two poor runs where he looked reluctant. Dropped to a seller 4TO and showed improved form over 7f. Trainer went to 12k gns to retain him and ridden by main trainer Jockey. Of the lower weights he appeals as one with some further improvement. 60
9.  Prettilini 72 55 -17 Originally with B. Meehan and claimed. 45
10. Blushing Hilary 72 54 -18 59
11. Dream Factor 69 54 -15 47
12. Baytown Valentina 64 (OH62) 40 -24 9
13. Twilight Avenger 64 (OH61) 42 -22 Originally with B. Meehan and claimed. 10
Pre-Race Summary :
  • Similar to the previous two nurseries so far with seller and claimer level runners making up a good proportion of the field and rated too highly. The three topweights have a little in hand over the general level and more scope to improve but not by big amounts.
  • Power Broker appears to have been given a lenient weight on what he has achieved and has positives to suggest he can improve further. He hasn't grown much from the sales and has shown mental immaturity (or possibly a lack of a competitive attitude) and has not been hard pressed by his jockey in his runs to date. He has been given a good opportunity in this race so we should find out how good he is.
